O God, whose blessed Son came into the world that he might destroy the works of the devil and make us children of God and heirs of eternal life: Grant that, having this hope, we may purify ourselves as he is pure; that, when he comes again with power and great glory, we may be made like him in his eternal and glorious kingdom; where he lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.

Revealing Christ's Love:
Caring for the sheep
Searching for the lost
Dearly Beloved,

The hundreds of movies, TV shows, and books concerning the end of the world are a testament to human curiosity with "the end." We all want to know what it's going to be like, how we should be prepared, if we will be safe, and when it's going to happen.

Jesus said a lot about "the end" when he will return to judge the living and the dead and establish his kingdom on earth. But Jesus doesn't give us many details about what it's going to be like (nor does he ever indicate when!). Rather than being obsessed over details about the end of the world, Jesus wants us to be concerned with living wisely in the present. For Jesus, those who live faithfully as his disciples in the present are those who are prepared for his return.

The parable of the ten bridesmaids (five wise and five foolish) demonstrates Jesus' concern with preparedness. In the parable, a door is shut and it is too late for the foolish bridesmaids to enter the wedding banquet. This image is a startling one that urges us to take our discipleship seriously lest we be found unprepared.

One of the ways we live as those prepared is to have a healthy relationship with our possessions--otherwise known as stewardship. Disciples of Jesus who hold on to their possessions lightly and seek to become rich toward God show that their treasure is in heaven. So, how do we know we're being faithful stewards who are prepared for the return of Jesus? There is no list or formula with which we can calculate our faithfulness, but there are some principles we can draw from Scripture that might shape our hearts as good stewards. Giving more than we can, taking risks, and making specific sacrifices are a good place to start.

Jesus calls us to bear a cross in every area of our lives--including the economic sphere. As you think through your charitable expenditures in the coming year, what sacrifices might the Lord be asking you to make? When those sacrifices are made out of a desire to be more like Jesus who sacrificed everything, God is honored and the mission of his church can move forward!

In Jesus' Name,
Fr. Cameron+
