Avenue 50 & York Boulevard Park Planning Workshop Is a Success!

Over 50 community members came out to Burbank Middle School on Thursday for the first York Park Planning Workshop. After listening to a presentation by Council District 14 and the Department of Recreation & Parks (RAP), attendees broke out into 10 groups to develop basic concepts for the future park.

Per the state grant's requirements, the park must include a playground, adult fitness zone, seating/community space, landscaping & irrigation, a restroom, security lighting, decorative fencing, and green space/walking path. While all of these features must be included, there are no specific requirements for how big each feature should be or where it can be placed.

In addition to the required features, community members came up with many things to add to the park, including:
  • an amphitheater
  • sculptures
  • a water play pump for kids
  • craftsman-style play equipment
  • an outdoor classroom
  • movable chairs and tables (similar to those found in Grand Park in Downtown Los Angeles)
At the end of the workshop, attendees voted on the top three basic concepts. RAP will be drawing these basic concepts and presenting them at the next meeting. The community will then be able to flesh out the details for each, modify features, and more.

For more information about this project, please contact Councilmember Huizar's Northeast Office at (323) 254-5295 or email Nate Hayward at nate.hayward@lacity.org.

Swim For Health!
Keep Glassell Pool Open Year Round!

The Glassell Pool is due to close as a year-round pool after Labor Day in 2014. Due to city budget cuts, starting in 2014, the pool will be operated on a seasonal schedule, open only during the summer. For years, swimmers from all over the Northeast Los Angeles community have enjoyed this pool, which offers lap swim, lessons for swimmers of all ages, and swim and water ballet teams. It also provides life guard training to youths and hosts the Marshall HS swim team during practice and meets against teams like ERHS.

Friends of Glassell Pool have launched a SWIM FOR HEALTH fundraising effort. The group is looking for local corporate and community partners to help maintain and improve this neighborhood gem. The money raised will be used to supplement and enhance the Recreation and Parks budget. Your donation to the LA Parks Foundation, the City of LA Department of Recreation and Parks' fiscal agent, is 100% tax deductible. For more information on LAPF, please visit the website at www.laparksfoundation.org. Checks are made payable to LA Parks Foundation and should be mailed to the LA Parks Foundation at 11973 San Vicente Blvd, Suite 200, Los Angeles, CA 90049 and earmarked for the Glassell Pool on the memo line.

For more information, please contact Ronnie Solman at (323) 246-5653 or solm2@aol.com.
