Councilmember Requests
City of LA Legal Response to Pollution Violations

As the Chair of the City’s Energy & Environment Committee, Councilmember Huizar led a meeting Wednesday in which the AQMD reported on details regarding air-pollution violations by Exide Technologies, a battery recycling operation in the City of Vernon.

The Committee supported Councilmember Huizar’s call for a 30-day report from the City Attorney and the Chief Legislative Analyst on the City of Los Angeles’ response, legal or otherwise, to the violations, which could pose a health risk to City residents.

Councilmember Huizar stressed that the company’s compliance, overseen by the AQMD, should include the highest, cleanest most modern upgrades, regardless of costs, and should be implemented as quickly as possible, and not stretch out over the three years allowed by law.

Excide has been ordered to reduce the higher than acceptable levels of arsenic being released in the atmosphere, which among other health risks, increases cancer risks to those exposed over a long period of time.

The order from the AQMD affects as many as 110,000 residents in Southeast Los Angeles and other surrounding communities, including Boyle Heights and East L.A.
With the supervision of the AQMD, Exide must now hold public meetings to inform the public on a plan of action to reduce the harmful pollutants.
