Councilmember Huizar Announces 100 Bus Bench Art Installation

Los Angeles City Councilmember José Huizar invites Angelenos to keep an eye out for new public art on the streets debuting this week in Council District 14.  Twenty artistic installations will be placed on bus benches throughout Downtown Los Angeles and Boyle Heights on Friday, July 5, 2013.
The City of Los Angeles’ DoArt Foundation (DoArt) and Make Art Public (MAP) curated the installations in coordination with Martin Outdoor Media after Councilmember Huizar’s office reached out to the company with the idea of filling available spaces on the benches with art until they are leased out for advertisement.
“This project gives us the opportunity to bring art to the public right-of-way,” said Councilmember Huizar, describing how the project got started.  “I want to thank all our partners, especially the artists, for lending their talents to the City.”
DoArt, a local arts organization focused on public art and education, and MAP, a Montreal-based collective dedicated to creating public art on unsold advertising space, funded and curated the project, selecting artists Dulce Pinzón and Jon Rafman for the installations.
Councilmember Huizar has long pushed for more art in public places through his initiation of a 1st Street Arts Corridor in Boyle Heights and leading the effort to adopt a new Mural Ordinance for the City of Los Angeles.

Preparing to Relocate to our Newly Renovated Building!

In 2008, our former CD 14 Boyle Heights offices were severely damaged during the Chino Hills earthquake.  Thanks to Councilmember Huizar, this historic building located at First and Chicago has been completely renovated and retrofitted to serve as the new Boyle Heights City Hall.

In preparation for the move this summer, the temporary Boyle Heights office, located on First and State, will close beginning Tuesday, June 4, 2013.

During this transition, Boyle Heights’ staff will temporarily relocate to our El Sereno Field office, located at 4927 Huntington Dr. North, beginning Tuesday, June 4th and will relocate to our new building at 2130 E. 1st St. sometime this summer. There will be no disruption to service or staff availability.

You may still reach Boyle Height’s staff by email or by phone at (323) 526-3059.

In addition to Councilmember Huizar’s District Office, the Boyle Heights City Hall is expected to house the Community Development Department; Family Source Center; Bureau of Street Services; Department of Aging; SCE Federal Credit Union; CollegeTrack and other community organizations.

The completion of this multi-million renovation will be the final piece to Councilmember Huizar’s vision for a Boyle Heights Civic Center at First and Chicago, which has already seen the completion of the new Hollenbeck Police Station, Ross Valencia Park, and a renovated Benjamin Franklin Library.

We look forward to serving you soon at the Historic Boyle Heights City Hall!
