Neighborhood Purpose Grant

 
Looking to improve your community? Apply for A Neighborhood Purposes Grant (NPG) through the Boyle Heights Neighborhood Council. An NPG should build community and enhance the neighborhood once completed. Any grant issued must be for a public purpose: in short, how will the grant help the community? Projects may encompass a wide range and can include, but are not
limited to:

Beautification
Community Support
Education
Community Improvements.

The Heidi Duckler Dance Theatre and Danza Floricanto/USA will present EXPULSION, an interdisciplinary work that will contribute to East Los Angeles' dynamic social ecology. On three stories of scaffolding on East 1st Street and Boyle Avenue, Artistic Directors Heidi Duckler and Gema Sandoval will animate a vacant lot with bold movement and catalyze community dialog to explore the notion of "home" in Boyle Heights and beyond.

The 2013 Congressional Hispanic Caucus Institute High School Latino Leaders in D.C.  recruitment information is now available!

The FREE six day civic engagement and leadership program for Latino high school students will take place July 14-19th in Washington, D.C. Students must reside in Los Angeles County, Orange County or San Bernardino County and meet the following requirements:

·         Be a current 9th, 10th, or 11th grade student
·         Demonstrate interest in learning more about civic engagement

 The program application is due Monday, April 8th at 11:59 pm Eastern Standard Time and can be found at http://apply.chci.org/.

Join the Boyle Heights Farmers Market as they team up with  Boyle Heights vendors  who will be on hand to bring you organic fresh fruits and vegetables, hot foods, prepackaged nuts and legumes, and a variety of jewelry by artisans.  The farmers’ market will operate every Friday from 3:00 – 8:00 p.m. 
 
This fun-filled event is the perfect family destination for families every Friday evening.  Families can take advantage of purchasing fresh fruits and vegetables directly from farmers, enjoy a nice meal, and partake in the live entertainment.

Pennies and Keys Campaign in Support of Bracero Statue
 
The Union Binacional de Ex-Braceros is seeking your donations of pennies and keys or other copper materials to help build a statue that will be dedicated to the hard work of Mexican Braceros between 1942 and 1964.
 
Donations may be dropped off or delivered to the Mexican Cultural Institute at 125 Paseo de La Plaza, Los Angeles, CA 90012. This is an ongoing campaign. For further information please contact Baldomero Capiz via email at unionbinacional@gmail.com.

Join the Jewish Historical Society of Southern California and the Breed Street Shul Project for a special screening of GHOSTS OF THE THIRD REICH. The thought-provoking documentary “Ghosts of the Third Reich” documents the moving stories of descendants of the Nazis. These individuals, whose family members were supporters, officers, and elite of the Nazi regime, share a common desire to distance themselves from Nazi ideology and to liberate themselves from the guilt they bear seventy years later.

The Partnership invites parents and families of Stevenson Middle School, Mendez Learning Center, Roosevelt High School, Hollenbeck Middle School, and Sunrise Elementary School to take part in this free program to learn about college readiness and access for our youth. Dispute Resolution Program

 
Community members can benefit from mediation by saving time, money and emotional distress trough the mediation of disputes. DRP offers free mediation services and mediation training for any Los Angeles County resident, or person who has conducted business in our community, and is involved in a dispute. Mediation is a confidential, voluntary process in which a neutral third party facilitates communication between people to resolve their disputes. Los Angeles Regional Food Bank Commodity Supplemental Food Program

 
If you or someone you know is a senior (60 years and older) and meets the Senior Income Guidelines of $1,180 per month (1 person) or $1,594 per month (2 persons), they may qualify to participate in the Los Angeles Regional Food Bank Commodity Supplemental Food Program. This program will provide seniors with a FREE Food Kit once a month, prepared with specific nutritional needs in mind, and will include meats, canned fruits and vegetables, dry milk and related products, cereals and other grain products, plus much more!
 
Program Requirements are as follows:
Seniors (60 years and older)
*Picture ID with Date of Birth
* Proof of Income – Social Security, SSI or Pension 
(Bank Statement, Check Stub, Benefit Award Letter) OR
*Medi-CAL Card
 
You can authorize someone to pick up your food every month! Note: Please make sure to bring that person with you at the time of your first visit.
