Penge Green Gym
Hello Green Gymers
It’s nearing the end of summer and we have been lucky to enjoy a long spell of fantastic weather...
However, with the lack of rain the sun drenched gardens are looking a little sorry for themselves with droopy hedgerows, thirsty orchard trees, wilting borders and bolting veg. Penge Green Gym volunteers came out in great numbers this week ready to water, mulch, feed and generally give the gardens some much needed TLC! The highlight was using our very own home-made compost as mulch for the orchard trees and hedgerows. Over the next few months we'll be working to mulch the gardens further to protect plants from cooler weather and keep the moisture in.
But great news....rain is forecast over the weekend so the gardens will get a great big drink. They deserve it!
Penge Green Gym go hunting for inspriration...
After the Green Gym this week, 14 Green Gymers headed off in the Give2give minibus over to Grow Mayow Community Garden
in Lower Sydenham. This beautiful spot is home to a wide diversity of plants, a fantastic refuge for wildlife, and valuable educational centre. The aim of our trip was to gather thoughts and ideas for Winsford Gardens and the sustainability of Penge Green Gym moving forward. Some great ideas for planting and habitat creation were sprung. Unfortunately we were not able to access the main gardens and receive a guided tour so if there is enough interest this tour can be re-arranged for a future date.
