Dear Penge Green Gym Supporters
A very Merry Christmas from Winsford Gardens
With the unseasonably warm weather work at Winsford Gardens has been continuing at a pace. Everything has continued to grow (including the pesky weeds) and animals and insects have been taking advantage of the warm autumn days. Exciting finds have included our resident frogs, slow worms enjoying the warmth of the leaf bays and very excitingly 17 stag beetle lavae. We have put the logs back in place so the lavae can carry on their lives underground until they are ready to come out.
Visits from TCV
Over the last couple of weeks we were very happy to be joined by a couple of representatives from TCV. Roberta joined us for a day of digging and chatting about the impacts of volunteering at a green gym on the young and old. And last week Claudia came out of the office for a day of compost turning. Hope we didn't work you too hard Claudia!!
With some funding leftover from the grant from Capital Clean up we are buying some more hedging whips to plant in some new areas. We have been hard at work digging trenches for the new hedges to go in which has turned out to be heavy work due to the large amount of rubble in the ground!
News about the growing area
After the destruction of the greenhouse we also had some damage to the fence surrounding the growing area. The Landscape Group have kindly reinstated the fence and we hope to finish it off in the new year. We are also hard at work building cold frames for the seedlings that we will grow for our open day in June to live in spring.
More funding from MPGA
In the last week we have heard that we are having been granted more money for our rose beds from MPGA. The money already awarded has been spent on roses for the 3rd rose bed which are beginning to look lovely. We have a 4th rose bed that had been neglected and no roses were remaining so this money will buy a selection of new roses. This will complete the rose bed area and bring that area in the gardens back to their former glory. A big thank you to MPGA.
