Penge Green Gym

Hello Green Gymers

Yet another fantastic session in the gardens this week, with loads of green gymers coming out to re-build, plant-up and sharpen to their hearts content!

The mood took the group to finally do something about the meadow fences which this year have taken a battering from local dogs intent on using the weavers to play fetch…..grrrrr! The fencing team took apart that which remained and re-built it with material salvaged from around the gardens, subtly nailing it together to prevent further attack. Let’s hope the fence survives better with this attempt!

The planting-out team resolutely dug into the hard clay soil of our beds, adding our very own home-made compost to loosen the soil, and planted the beds up with hollyhocks and foxgloves. Here's looking forward to the display they give us next year.

Without doubt the most important task carried out this week was tool maintenance. A dedicated team sharpened, scrubbed and oiled our trusty but long-suffering tools back to sparkly health...thank you!

Penge Green Gym's day out at Heavers Meadow

Willow Coppicing

Five members of Penge Green Gym took themselves down to Heavers Meadow on Thursday to join the Action for Croydon's Environment team. A great day was spent exploring this water meadow, created through flooding of Norbury Brook. After splashing through the meadow to locate suitable willow stems, volunteers coppiced, snedded and transported the material back to Winsford Gardens for use in the Wednesday sessions. Good work!
