Penge Green Gym

Welcomes the Autumn

Hello Green Gymers

As the summer’s buzz of activity dies down for the Green Gymers into the cooler season of changing colours and shorter days, the group have been taking off their gardening hats and firmly pulling on  their maintenance and conservation hats keeping the gardens tidy and wildlife friendly into the winter.
After having only been re-built last week, the meadow fence fought off further attack over the week and subsequently needed a little TLC at yesterday’s session. After having knocked the pieces back into place, the fence building team then turned their hands to re-building the fence around the second wildflower meadow with willow collected from an additional session spent at Heaver’s Meadow on Thursday 4th October. The new golden willow fence looks great!

The stoical planting-out team took yet another batch of foxgloves from the coldframe, planting them into their permanent positions where they will flower next spring. To keep them warm over the winter a generous mulch of home-made compost was also added. The team also kept up to date with the deadheading on the late flowering roses and cosmos to keep them going well into the autumn.

The composting team finally succeeded in sorting through the pile of green waste that has been building up throughout the summer, layering it into the compost bins and tidying the compost area. A huge improvement ….and a great session had by all.

See you next week!
