Junior Hockey Festival Success

Saturday 20th April served up the inaugural Grove Menzieshill Youth Hockey Festival.  Over 150 players participated in the festival showing off their skills and flair in the beating sun.

Youth teams from hockey clubs around Scotland made an early start to be in Dundee for 10am.  With young players aged from 6 to 16 from the clubs of Dunfermline Carnegie, Perthshire, Grove Menzieshill, Brechin/Monarchs, Kinross and the Junior Hockey Academy of Perth took part in the festival.  A total of 29 teams forming U10, U12, U14 & U16 age group teams played from 10am to 4pm.

The club also used the festival as a prime development opportunity for the club’s youth umpires.  All matches were umpired by youths who gained valuable match experience. The games were played at a very high standard with an array of tomorrow's international players on display.

Lauren Boag was appointed as the youth festival tournament director which continued the youth theme by Grove Menzieshill Hockey Club.  With her enthusiasm she ensured the event ran smoothly and thanked all the Grove Menzieshill members and families for their help in ensuring the schedule of 6 matches every 12 minutes were played.

The youth coaches of Grove Menzieshill led by Chris Anderson were delighted by the response and enthusiastic support which all teams had from family and friends.

Jaclyn Suttie, President of Grove Menzieshill stated it was greatly encouraging to witness all the hard work done by hockey clubs and the local authorities in developing our sport and it being celebrated in the youth festival.

Tumbling Award for Gymnastics Coaches

6 coaches from Dundee Gymnastics Club 2K have completed a UKCC Level 1 Tumbling Gymnastics course.

This course allows the coach to train gymnasts in the sport of Tumbling which is a distinct sub-type of gymnastics with its own competitions.  DGC2K is introducing Tumbling as a discipline alongsideWomen's Artistic Gymnastics and therefore needs suitably trained coaches.  The club aims to run 2 x 2 hour tumble sessions for exerienced gymnasts and 2 x 1.5 hour sessions for beginners at the newly refurbished Dick McTaggart Gymnastics Centre.

The club was awarded a grant of £616.00 from SportDundee towards the cost of the 6 coaches attending the course.  This will enable them to assist a more qualified coach at the new sessions.

Funding to 'Celebrate' the Commonwealth Games

A new £4 million fund set up to support Scots to celebrate their part in the Commonwealth before, during, and after the Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games opened on Tuesday April 30 2013.

Celebrate is a joint scheme originated by the Scottish Lottery Distributor’s Forum (SLDF) offering funding for events and projects which celebrate Glasgow 2014 or that are inspired by Scottish links to the 71 nations and territories which make up the Commonwealth.

Speaking at the launch of this new fund at the People’s Palace and Winter Gardens in Glasgow Shona Robison, Minister for Commonwealth Games and Sport said:

“Creating exciting opportunities for communities across Scotland is what Celebrate is all about.  We want people to have fun, be excited and to create a legacy that will be around long after the Games have taken place.  Wherever you are in Scotland, I would encourage you to be part of it and join in the celebration.”

Louise Martin CBE, chair of sportscotland, added: “With the launch of the Go Scotland! supporters campaign last week, and now this exciting new fund there are fantastic opportunities for communities across Scotland to really be part of the excitement around the Commonwealth Games.

“There is a real scope for clubs, schools and community groups to be creative about how they celebrate and we hope they will rise to the challenge, using the Games to encourage more people to try something new and hopefully embark on a life-long journey in sport.”

Celebrate has been developed by the SLDF which is made up of all four Scottish Lottery Distributors, Big Lottery Fund, Creative Scotland, Heritage Lottery Fund and sportscotland. It is open to applications from today for celebrations of the people, places and culture of the Commonwealth and of the Games themselves.

Commonwealth Games Qualifying Time for McColgan

A superb run by Dundee Hawkhill Harriers athlete, Eilish McColgan won the 1500m race at the Loughborough International event in a time of 4.09.67, the best by a British athlete this year and just inside the 4.10 Glasgow 2014 standard.

Steeplechaser Eilish McColgan was one of many Scottish athletes to have secured a qualifying standard for Glasgow 2014 at the event.  Having returned from a career-threatening injury to compete at the London 2012 Olympic Games, McColgan now feels ready to reap the benefits of having a full winter of training behind her.

Good luck to Eilish for the rest of the season!!
