Grant Aid for DGC2K Coaches

SportDundee has awarded Dundee Gymnastics Club 2K £681.48 towards the costs of 3 club coaches attending a week-long international training camp in Denmark as a development opportunity.  The coaches - Bea Petersen, Lisa Mitchell & Paul Carson attended the training camp along with coaches from Russia, Germany & Denmark to further their technical knowledge in strength & conditioning and in the areas of preparing elite athletes for bars, vault, tumble and beam.
Dundee Gymnastics Club 2K has a number of high performance gymnasts, including Jordan Archibald and Kirsty Campbell who are on track with their preparations for selection for the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow 2014. Lord Provost Bob Duncan stated 'This international training camp was a fantastic opportunity for these local coaches to develop their knowledge and skills.  The sport of gymnastics is very strong in Dundee and this was highlighted by the city being chosen as the site for the new Regional Gymnastics facility.  Hopefully the hard work and dedication shown by these coaches, along with the introduction of a fantastic new facility, will lead to continued success for our local gymnasts.
Confirmation was received from Sport Relief in November that the Jenny Wood Allen Sport Relief Mile held at Camperdown Park in March 2012 raised a fantastic £12,336.23!!!!  The event was organised by the Sports Development Section, volunteers from SportDundee and friends of the late Jenny Wood Allen.  500 runners participated in the 1, 3 & 6 mile events and enjoyed the Come & Try events put on by SportDundee affiliated clubs.

Congratulations to everyone involved in the event and hopefully this total can be surpassed when Sport Relief returns in 2014!!

National Records for local swimmer Brandon

The 2012 SDS National Championships for Junior Swimmers with a learning disability were held at Scotstoun Leisure Centre on Wednesday 21st November and local swimmer Brandon Buchan was on top form setting new national records in the 100m Individual Medley in a time of 1.10.16 and 100m Freestyle in a time of 59.28, the first Scottish swimmer to break the one minute mark.

Brandon, a member of Menzieshill Whitehall Swimming & Water Polo Club was awarded the 'top boy' award at the event.

The Quality Mark Accreditation Scheme, run by the Scottish FA in partnership with McDonald’s and sportscotland, recognises proactive clubs and schools working to increase youth and community participation. There are four Quality Mark categories - Standard, Development, Community and Legacy.  Clubs and schools are recognised through the scheme after demonstrating outstanding performances in areas such as coach and player development, management, administration, welfare and planning.  By the end of 2012 more than 390 clubs and schools will have achieved accreditation over the four categories.

Scottish Champion for Dundee City Aquatics

Dundee City Aquatics (DCA) is a performance swimming club that aims to help all swimmers perform at a high level.  Triathlon is one of the fastest growing sports in the UK and DCA is keen to get involved in this exciting (if somewhat exhausting) sport of continual swim, bike, run.
The club is delighted to have helped to develop one of the future stars of triathlon, Jamie Ingledew (pictured above left).  This super fit young man won the Scottish Triathlon Championships in August. Jamie also took the winners title in the Scottish Aquathlon League. This league comprises of a whole year of events and Jamie was announced as the overall 2012 winner last month. Jamie follows in the footsteps of his elder brother Fergus who also swims for DCA and represented Scotland in triathlon this year at senior level.
Another rising talent in the club is 11 year old Sam McInnes (pictured above right). Sam won the 2011 Scottish Aquathlon League. This year she moved up an age group and as one of the youngest competitors, Sam managed to take second place, beaten only by the current UK Champion.
Many other members of DCA take part in aquathlons and triathlons, the youngest is 8 and the oldest is over 50. DCA is currently investigating the possibility of developing a triathlon section - interested partners and sponsors should contact
