Wicket, Flick It, Try It Event Success

Dundee Wanderers Hockey Club, Dundee Eagles and Dundee High School FP Cricket Club held a joint Funday on Sunday 1st September at Dalnacraig grounds, Arbroath Road, Dundee.  Despite the windy weather there was a good turnout of approx. 300 people with over 100 kids signing up at the registration tents.  There was plenty on offer from formal sports opportunities in cricket, hockey and rugby to lots of fun competitions; beat the goaly, assault course and fastest bowler.  In addition to this there were local businesses advertising their services and Bouncy Betty did a roaring trade with the bouncy castles, impossible bike, candy floss stall and other fun fairground games.
The organisers of Wicket, Flick It, Try It would like to say a huge thank you to the sponsors of the event John Clark MINI Tayside as without their contribution the day could not have gone ahead.  They also had a large amount of local support from Wave 102 and Help for Kids to Heal Physiotherapy, Aitkens Wines, McGills Electrical, Scott Brothers butchers and Mark Walker Architects.  There was also sporting equipment on sale through Monarch Hockey, PSL and Clubsport.

The organisers really hope that everyone had an enjoyable day and they look forward to seeing everyone coming along to the clubs to join in (young and old).

GB Success for Dundee Ducks Players

Jack Henderson, Liam Griffin & Jonathan McBean (left to right) from Dundee Ducks Roller Hockey Club, along with the other GB Under 10 Team members did extremely well in Los Angeles this summer coming home with a Gold medal and remaining undefeated in the American Athletic Union (AAU) Jr Olympics Event. Jonathan was top points scorer for Team GB in the Tournament as well as one of the top point scorers in the entire tournament.
Two of the boys have received financial support from SportDundee through a National Athlete grant and the money received went towards offsetting the high expense of taking part in the Team GB Inline Hockey set –up. The whole process is unfunded and has cost thousands of pounds in training and travel expense for each of the participants.

Congratulations to all the boys on their achievement.

Gymnastics Success at School Games

Two Gymnasts from Dundee Gymnastics Club 2K represented Scotland at the 2013 Sainsburys School Games held from 12th to 15th September in the Ice Arena, Sheffield.  Sarah McKenzie & Sofia Ramzan helped Scotland take Bronze in the Women's Artistic Gymnastics team event behind England and Wales.

The girls are some of the many local gymnasts who can now train at the new Dick McTaggart Regional Gymnastics facility, a fantastic resource for local gymnasts.

Victory for Dundee Korfball Club

Dundee Korfball Club entered its first international korfball competition earlier this month and came away with not one, but two trophies. The team travelled to Etten-Leur, in the far south of korfball's homeland, the Netherlands. The team played against two Dutch teams and two Belgian teams in a recreational tournament on the Saturday, losing 4-0 to both Etten-Leur and Keep Fit (from nearby Roosendaal), but beating Terda 2-1 and Appels 2-0. The team's wins against the two Belgian sides proved decisive in determining the competition's overall outcome, with Dundee ending up second overall, just behind the winning host club, Etten-Leur.

On the Sunday, the club took on another team from Etten-Leur (drawing 4-4 this time), before beating two other teams from Belgian clubs (AKC1 by 5 goals to 4, and Ekerse by 8 goals to 3). This put the Dundonians through to the final of their 4-team pool, where they once again triumphed over AKC1, this time by 5 goals to 2.

The Dundee club now has two teams in pre-season training ahead of the upcoming Scottish Korfball League, with Dundee 1 playing in the top division, and Dundee 2 in the second tier. New players are welcome to come along to any of their training sessions, which take place at the Ardler Complex on Turnberry Avenue every Thursday evening. Juniors train from 5:30-6:30pm, and seniors from 6:30-8:00pm. Training and matches are open to both male and female players, as korfball is the world's only truly mixed-sex team sport, and everyone's first training session is completely free of charge. For more details please see the club's website at or contact Nigel Cooper on 07817 640432.
