Happy New Year from SportDundee

SportDundee would like to wish everyone a Happy New Year!!  Looking forward to a fantastic year of sport in 2014!!

Success for Grove Menzieshill Hockey Tournament

The 4th annual Grove Menzieshill Invitational Tournament took place over the festive season at DISC. The tournament proved to be a big success with teams of all ages and genders taking part over the 4 day calendar.

The event included teams from all over the world with the likes of Scotland, Wales and The USA, as well as club teams Grove Menzieshill, Hillhead, Inverleith and Dundee Wanderers all taking part over the busy weekend.

The Tournament started with the Youth games taking place on the Friday, allowing young players to mix for the first time and to take part in training sessions run by various coaches. This was followed by the 2 day men’s and women’s competitions. The men’s tightly contested final was eventually won by Grove Menzieshill, defeating a youthful Scotland team 2-1 on penalty strokes. The women’s final was won by Dundee Wanderers who defeated Scotland 'Blues' 8-3, with Scotland internationalist Vikki Bunce grabbing a hat-rick for Wanderers. On the final day, the youth tournament took place including various teams from across Tayside taking part with players ages ranging from under 10 level up to under 16 level.

The event was supported by SportDundee through a National / International Events grant. Thanks to the club for promoting SportDundee over the weekend!

New Qualifications for Young Korfball Players

A group of Dundee Korfball Club's youngest members received their SKA Level 1 Korfball Skills Awards in the run up to the Christmas break. A handful of these players started playing korfball with the club over 18 months ago, and have stuck with the sport through thick and thin.

To earn their Level 1 skills awards, each of Dundee's young players has had to demonstrate all of the basic skills of korfball over a time course of several weeks to several months. The skills tested include passing and catching, marking and evading, shooting, defending, and playing as part of a team (this includes taking support positions and demonstrating good sporting behaviour). The coaches will now focus on helping the youngsters build towards their level 2 awards.

For anyone wanting to get involved, training takes place at the Ardler Complex on Turnberry Avenue every Thursday evening, beginning on January 9, 2014. Juniors (6-14 years old) train from 5:30 to 6:30pm, and seniors (14-50+) from 6:30 to 8:00pm. Contact Nigel Cooper on 07817 640432, or see the club's website at for more details.
