SportDundee Commonwealth Games Challenge - fantastic opportunities across the city

Thank you to all the clubs that helped to make the SportDundee Commonwealth Games Challenge a real success!!

The project, funded by 'Celebrate', saw 5 weekends of free activity delivered for children and adults across the city.  Sports on offer included football, hockey, tennis, water polo, diving, rugby, taekwon do, cricket, netball, korfball and more.

The 'Celebrate' funding was used to promote the project by providing all school children in the city with an information leaflet and to pay for the facilities to enable the sessions to go ahead without any cost to clubs or participants.

The project allowed participants to try out new sports that are offered by local clubs all year round.  With the success of the Commonwealth Games, let's hope we see lots of new members over the next few weeks!!

Queen's Baton Relay - a superb day for Dundee

Congratulations to all the Queen's Baton Bearers from Dundee - what a fantastic day it was on Friday 27 June!!

Coaches, volunteers and athletes from a number of SportDundee affiliated clubs were involved in the Relay which saw the baton travel through the city and visit a number of well-known sites including Camperdown park, McTaggart Gymnastics Centre and Caird Park athletics track and velodrome.

Large numbers turned out to cheer the baton through the city - a brilliant way to get everyone ready to cheer on Scotland at the Commonwealth Games!!

International Hockey Action

Dundee International Sports Complex (DISC) was delighted to be hosting a Commonwealth Games warm up match. The Trinidad and Tobago mens hockey team played a Grove-Menzieshill ‎select as part of their preparations for the Commonwealth Games. It was a great honour for Dundee and particularly DISC which now has one of the best hockey pitches in the country. Trinidad and Tobago were based at Strathallan School and travelled to Dundee courtesy of Grove Menzieshill Hockey Club.

Dundee East MSP Shona Robison welcomed the visitors and started the match by taking the pass back.

The match was won 4 - 2 by Trinidad & Tobago.  Well done to all the players and the volunteers who helped to organise the match.

Commonwealth Games Selection for Dundee Hockey Players

Dundee has been well represented at the Commonwealth Games Hockey with 6 players from local clubs representing the Scotland women's team.

Ailsa Wyllie, Linda Clement, Ali Bell and Leigh Fawcett from Grove Menzieshill Hockey Club (pictured above) as well as Vikki Bunce and Becky Ward from Dundee Wanderers Hockey Club have been playing fantastically.

The girls narrowly missed out on a semi-final place after a 2-1 defeat to England.

There are Dundee representatives in the men's team as well including brothers Niall & Ross Stott who previously played for Dundee Wanderers Hockey Club.

Congratulations to all the players on their selections - fantastic to see local hockey being represented at this level.

Success for Broughty Ferry Tennis Club

Congratulations to Broughty Ferry Tennis Club Head Coach Craig Barr who won the men's singles at the North Angus Open in Montrose.

He completed a successful event by also winning the men's doubles with the club's top junior Scott Hamilton. Congratulations to them both!!
