National Basketball Success for Tayside Musketeers

The Tayside Musketeers Basketball Club Junior Men have become only the second team in the club's history to win the Under 18 National Championship.  In an extremely competitive league where the top 4 teams were all capable of beating each other the Musketeers lost only 2 games in the 18 game season seeing off Edinburgh Kings into second place with 3 losses.

The Muskies went on a 15 and 0 run in the league at the beginning of the season with notable victories over Kings in Portobello where they were 19 points down in the second half and won the last quarter 18 to 2 to secure a 1 point victory and again away to 4th place Falkirk where they were 14 down and came back to win by 6.

The team have been unlucky with injuries going into the end of the season and this has led to a couple of defeats and a nail biting end to the season.  This is a fantastic achievement for the side who have considerably less internationalists in their side in relation to second place Edinburgh. Captain Nicky Sim is the only one who has made the final National squad to play in European competition this summer. Nicky stated ‘we just play together as a team, trust each other and the results have paid off’.

The club's only other success at this age level came in 2001 when coach John Grant won the title with an extremely talented team including current professional and Scotland senior captain Gareth Murray.

Current coach Paul Boath said ‘I am really pleased for the boys to end with a league title medal. We have been together now for 3 years and have had a great run winning 3 national titles and playing in 3 national finals and we still have a shot at the playoffs if we can get some players back to fitness. It will be a sad day for me when the seniors leave the club and I wish them all the best with university and their futures.'

Speed Skater's Olympic Hopes

Scott Anderson, a member of Dundee Speed Skating Club, is aiming to reach the top of his sport of long track speed skating.

Scott has recently returned from 3 months of full-time training at the KIA Speed Skating Academy in Germany where he was coached by world record holder Jeremy Wotherspoon.  Scott was invited to attend the Academy and has been invited back for next season.

Scott is the only full-time British Long Track Speed Skater.  Although the National Ice Skating Association support him to be put forward for international competition, he currently receives no funding from them.

To enable Scott to return to the Academy for a full season from May 2013 he requires to raise £14,000 of funding.  This is on top of 10,000 Euros provided by International Skating Union who fund 14 athletes.

In the last 3 months, Scott has made fantastic progress and is only 2 seconds off the qualifying time for the World Cup and the Winter Olympics.  Although there is a chance that Scott could qualify for the 2014 Winter Olympics in Russia, his realistic target is for the 2018 event in South Korea.

To help to raise the £14,000 required, Scott is looking for sponsors and other fund-raising opportunities.  He has already approached a number of local companies and has raised money through a coffee morning and other fund-raising events.

If you or anyone you know is in a position to support Scott to become a Winter Olympian, please contact Alex Knight at alex.knight@leisureandculturedundee.com.
