London 2012 Civic Reception

Following a request at the SportDundee Executive Committee meeting in August, a Civic Reception was held to celebrate the contribution of all athletes, coaches, officials, volunteers and torchbearers from Dundee or affiliated to Dundee based clubs at London 2012.  Everyont involved in some way with the Olympics or paralympics received a keepsake from Lord Provost Bob Duncan who stated' The City of Dundee is very proud of everyone connected to the city who contributed in some way to the massive success of the Olympic & Paralympic Games in London.  This is our way of showing our appreciation for these individuals and the commitments they have made to sport and the feel good factor experienced across the country thanks to London 2012.

Tenerife Top Training for Local Swimmers

Tenerife Top Training, T3, was this year’s destination for Menzieshill Whitehall Swimming and Water Polo Club’s training camp.  Despite team building trips to Aberfeldy and Alton Towers in the past, this was the Club’s first training camp abroad as the joint Menzieshill Whitehall Club.  Twenty five swimmers, ranging from 9 to 23 years, together with 5 coaches and some adult volunteers, took the opportunity to join the training camp.

The T3 complex, located in La Caleta, Costa Adeje, and only a 15 minute walk up hill from the club's hotel,  was absolutely outstanding, incorporating a 50m Olympic outdoor pool, a 25m outdoor pool, a 330m, 3 lane athletics track, 3 fully equipped beach volleyball courts, 2 clay tennis, 2 squash and 7 glass paddle courts, 2 fully equipped gyms, an indoor flume channel,  natural and artificial grass pitches  for football and rugby, both FIFA approved, a beach soccer field, a wellness area, training equipment, teams and trainer changing rooms, physiotherapy and equipment rooms.  Not only are they first class facilities, the staff were extremely welcoming and very helpful.

During the training camp, we trained in the 50 m pool each day for 2 hours, and spent 1 hour land training, utilising the athletics track, one of the grass areas and beach volley ball courts.  We also made use of the indoor flume channel with 3D videosystem and underwater observation window. The swimmers were all remarkable in getting up, especially as we had some early morning rises at 6.15 am and, on the final day, started training in the floodlit pool before sunrise!

The trip was a huge success, enjoyed by both the swimmers, coaches and adult volunteers, and we hope to start our fundraising campaign soon to enable us to visit the complex again in the near future.

Team GB Call-Up for Local Umpire

Gavin Cruickshanks, a hockey umpire for Grove Menzieshill Hockey Club, has been selected to be part of Team GB for the Australian Youth Olympic Festival (AYOF). This event will take place on 16-20th January 2013 in and around many of the venues which were used for the 2000 Olympic Games. 17 sports will be competing this time round.  Further information on the event can be found at http://corporate.olympics.com.au/games/ayof-2013

The hockey tournament will be run as a 4 nations event with the youths of GB, Australia, Malaysia, China, USA and Argentina competing in the men's and women's tournaments. Gavin has been selected to umpire the men's tournament which will consist of the Argentines, Malaysians, Australians and Great Britain. This will be his first major tournament in his bid to follow in the footsteps of fellow Dundee umpire Ged Curran who umpired the men's hockey final at London 2012.

Gavin made the decision a few years ago to concentrate on umpiring and started with school matches and local games for Grove Menzieshill Hockey Club.  Gavin was selected to attend a Scottish Under 16 training weekend in Largs to umpire and progressed to national leagues matches.  2 seasons ago, Gavin stopped playing to concentrate fully on umpiring and it wasn't too long before he was selected for national league 2 and 1 games. Last season he committed to the indoor programme as well as the outdoor and this resulted in him becoming one of the regular national 1 umpires last season finishing the season well by umpiring the Scottish cup semi final between the two big Glasgow rivals, Kelburne and Western Wildcats.

Gavin was selected by the Scottish Umpiring Appointments Committee to attend one weekend of the Great Britain Super League, a small tournament for Great Britain's finest Under 23s to compete in. Gavin was told the event was a selection event for players, however, little did he know that there was the chance for one male and one female umpire to be jetting off to umpire in Sydney in January on the back of their performances at this event.

Gavin received information at the end of October that he had been selected to travel to Australia, a fantastic achievement!!  Gavin is very grateful to Scottish Hockey for the guidance he has received and to his suppotive employers for giving him the time to realise his ambitions.  Good luck Gavin!!

Clean Sweep for Dundee Gymnasts

Young Dundee Gymnasts competed in November in the Gordon Foster Memorial competition in Bell’s Sports Centre, Perth. The competition was in memory of Mr Foster’s contribution to gymnastics in Scotland and the competition proved to be an excellent forum for gymnasts at the development and elite levels to exhibit their talents.

Development and Performance Clubs from all over Scotland came together to compete for accolades and Dundee Gymnastics Club 2K (DGC2K) did not disappoint. The level 6 competition was won by team DGC2K: Abbie McDonald, Maia Ramzan, Ruby Hutton, Caitlin McAuley, Rebecca McCormack and Alisha Moran. The girls stormed ahead of the rest of the field and attained Team Gold with the individual performances of Abbie McDonald and Ruby Hutton showing expressive artistic prowess.

It was then on to the elite competition where the big guns were coming in from Glasgow, Largs, West Lothian and Aberdeenshire. Jordan Archibald, who was suffering from a back injury, was determined that she would compete along with her team members: Kirsty Campbell, Hayley Bell, Jennifer Brankin, Sarah McKenzie, Sophia Ramzan and Rosa Holm-Huxley. The girls held their grit throughout the competition and demonstrated their technical abilities which resulted in team Gold.

DGC2K is absolutely delighted and is looking forward to moving into the new purpose built Dick McTaggart Gymnastics Centre.  Head Coach Beate Petersen said that the club will now have the opportunity to build on the success as they will now have the appropriate facilities conducive to the overall technical development of gymnasts wishing to aspire within the performance arena. The Commonwealth Games are also drawing nearer and the facility will play a crucial role in relation in the preparation for selections for Jordan Archibald and Kirsty Campbell who are Senior Scottish Gymnasts .
