SportDundee Support for Kris

Kris Inglis, a member of Dundee Stars Junior Development Ice Hockey Team has been awarded a SportDundee National Athlete grant following selection for the Scotland Under 15 Ice Hockey Squad and the Great Britain Under 18 Prospect Squad.

Kris helped the Under 15 Scotland team to victory in a tournament in France and a third place finish in the English Ice Hockey Association Conference Tournament in Hull.

He has also been training with the Great Britain Under 18 Prospect Squad in Dumfries which has been an excellent development opportunity.

Kris has been playing ice hockey for over 8 years and has been a Dundee Stars member throughout this time.  His success is a great reflection on the quality of coaching available through the Dundee club who are based at Dundee Ice Arena.

Junior Triathlon Competition

Menzieshill Whitehall Swimming and Water Polo Club marked the end of this year's school swimming sessions with a fundraising triathlon at St John's High School on 19 June. Over 40 swimmers aged between 8 and 16 years took part in a gruelling reverse triathlon - run, cycle and swim. Competitors were divided into 4 different categories.  Tri-star 1 (10 years and under) run 600m, cycle 1800m swim 200m; Tri-star 2 (11/12 years) run 900m, cycle 2700m swim 400m; Tri-star 3 (13/14 years) run 1200m, cycle 3600m swim 800m; Tri-star 4 (15 years and over) run 1500m, cycle 4500m, swim 1200m.

All competitors did really well and gave it their all. Luckily the good weather helped to make this a superb event. Winners for each category were: Jake Muir, Ailsa Young, Kirsty Bell, and joint winners Hannah Edwards and Rebecca Duff. Lots of parents volunteered to ensure the smooth running of this popular event.

Preparations for TeamGym Camp

3 coaches from Dundee Discovery Gymnastics Club have recently passed their Level 1 General Gymnastics qualification which will enable them to complete the transition from participant to coaches within the club.  Siobhan Christie, Hollie Crowther, Lindsey Williamson all passed the exam at the first time of asking.  Chloe Doogan has also attended the course but will need to wait to sit her exam as she is still only 15.

This is great news for the club in advance of the TeamGym Camp they have organised to take place at the McTaggart Centre in August.  Teams from across Scotland and England will be attending the week long camp which is also incorporating a coach education course in the evenings.

TeamGym is a team competition for men and women, which includes routines being performed on three pieces of apparatus: floor, trampette and a tumbling track.

TeamGym routines require effective teamwork, excellent technique and spectacular acrobatic elements. Training and competitions generate an excellent team spirit amongst gymnasts with routines providing great entertainment and spectacle for participants and spectators.

Grove Menzieshill Youth Event

The Grove Menzieshill Hockey Club Youth Event, specifically for the club's junior members, was held at Dawson on 22 June and was a fantastic success.

A large number of kids attended and the senior kids tournament was won by the ‘Fire Breathing Rubber Duckies’ on running penalties after a 2-2 draw in a close final against ‘CH Custards’.

The club used the event as a celebration of all the fantastic club achievements over the last 12 months with a number of the senior players attending to coach and support the juniors.

National Performance Centre
Bid for Dundee

Dundee has been shortlisted in the last 3 as the venue for the National Performance Centre for Sport, along with Edinburgh & Stirling.

The vision for the National Performance Centre for Sport is to create an inspiring centre of excellence where the best athletes, coaches and officials in Scotland can come together to train and develop their skills, knowledge and expertise; and in doing so continue to improve their performances on the international stage.

If successful, the National Performance Centre would be situated in Camperdown Park.  Although the main focus of the centre would be football, there will be facilities for other sports including tennis and indoor sports, as well as sports science and strength & conditioning facilities and a 120 room hotel.

As part of the bid, clubs were asked to participate in filming at the end of June.  The footage can be viewed along with further information on the National Performance Centre at www.dundeesportcity.com by clicking on the You Tube link.

Fingers crossed this fantastic facility comes to Dundee!!
