LSU SRP Assists in Organizing and Planning Central & Eastern Europe Conference on Health and the Environment

Members of LSU SRP travelled to Cluj-Napoca, Romania on May 25-30, 2014 for the Central and Eastern European Conference on Health and the Environment (CEECHE). LSU SRP trainees and researchers participated in workshops, chaired sessions, and gave presentations on environmentally persistent free radicals or EPFRs and their impact on human health. LSU SRP's Dr. Slawvo Lomnicki served as a conference chair, as well as a member of the executive conference board and science committee, Dr. Robin McCarley served as a member of the program committee, Dr. Eli Mitran was a member of the executive conference board and organizing committee, and Dr. Robert Cook was a member of the science committee. LSU SRP trainees also gave presentations during the conference. For highlights of CEECHE, take a look at the video summary and photo album created by Kelli Palmer of the LSU SRP:

Trainees and Researchers in Action
LSU SRP trainee Godwin Nwosu, working with Dr. Robert Cook, attended the 248th ACS National Meeting & Exposition held in San Francisco, California on August 10-14, 2014. Nwosu presented "Possible Routes in the Low Temperature Formation of Environmentally Persistent Free Radicals in Polymer Modified Copper Clay System: A Soil Model System" in the Natural and Engineered Clay Barriers oral session.
Farewell to LSU SRP trainee alum William (BJ) Gehling who's leaving the LSU SRP to start a new job as QA/QC Lead Chemist for Honey Performance Material and Technology Plant in Geismar, Louisiana. BJ worked with LSU SRP Center Director Dr. Barry Dellinger and defended his dissertation entitled "Environmentally Persistent Free Radicals (EPFRs) in PM2.5: Their Contribution to Hydroxyl Radical Formation and Atmospheric Transformation" in 2013.
Congratulations to Dr. Stephania Cormier of the LSU SRP, working at the University of Tennessee Health Sciences Center (UTHSC), who has been named an Outstanding Postdoctoral Mentor by UTHSC and inducted into the Postdoctoral Mentor Academy.
Congratulations to LSU SRP trainee John Young, who received a research grant from the Louisiana Environmental Education Commission.  Young's grant  will be used to support his M.S. research on sampling fine particulate matter in homes.

Congratulations to Greg Lee, working with Dr. Stephania Cormier at the University of Tennessee Health Science Center (UTHSC), who successfully defended his dissertation entitled, "Environmentally Persistent Free Radicals and Influenza: A Double Whammy for Infants." Lee will be returning to the UTHSC to finish his MD.

Congratulations to LSU SRP trainee Nuwan Balapitiya, working with Dr. Robin McCarley, on successfully defending his dissertation entitled "Synthesis, Characterization, and Investigation of the Catalytic Activity of NiO, CuO, and NiO-CuO Nanoparticles on Silica as Surrogates of Combustion-Generated Nanoparticles" on July 24, 2014. Congratulations Nuwan!

Trainee Elisabeth Feld won a student award at the Central and Eastern Europe Conference on Health and the Environment (CEECHE) for her presentation entitled "Effect of Metal Specification on EPFR Formation in Fly Ash." Feld (right), received her award from LSU SRP Training Core leader Elisabeta Mitran.

Research Translation Core leader, Dr. Maud Walsh, has been named to the Board of Directors for the Louisiana Environmental Health Association (LEHA) for 2014-2018.
