LSU SRP Co-Sponsoring the Central and Eastern Europe Conference on Health and the Environment

The LSU Superfund Research Center is one of the organizers of The Central and Eastern European Conference on Health and the Environment (CEECHE), which will be held in Cluj-Napoca, Romania, May 25-30, 2014. The theme  is The Environment - A Platform for Health. The overall goal of the conference is to share knowledge and expertise on the underlying interrelation of human health and environmental exposures by bringing together international experts to present advances in the field of environmental sciences, engineering, technology, health sciences, and military conflicts. LSU SRP researchers and trainees will present several oral and poster presentations during the conference on topics including site remediation and thermal treatment, risk management and assessment, and nanotechnology and other emerging pollutants.
LSU SRP Mentee Places 3rd in LSU Environmentors Science Fair
Trainees Elisabeth Feld and Chelena Ren along with mentee Trey Crawford placed 3rd at LSU EnvironMentors Science Fair on April 28th. Crawford will present his research project, entitled "Effects of Different Metals on Barley Grass," at the National EnvironMentors Science Fair in Washington D.C. on May 19th and compete for a college scholarship. EnvironMentors is a national science and environmental science-based mentoring program that prepares high school students from under-represented backgrounds for college degree programs in environmental and related science fields. LSU SRP Trainees Receive Travel Awards to Attend Society of Toxicology Annual Meeting
LSU SRP trainees Gin Chuang and Brendan Burn, both working with Dr. Kurt Varner at the LSU Health Sciences Center in New Orleans, Louisiana, received travel awards to attend the Society of Toxicology 53rd Annual Meeting held March 24th-27th in Phoenix, Arizona. Chuang was awarded a Postdoctoral Travel Award by the Cardiovascular Toxicology Specialty Section of the Society of Toxicology and presented “Mitochondria and intrinsic apoptotic pathway mediate cardiac toxicity of environmentally persistent free radicals."  Burn received a Graduate Student Travel Support Award and presented “Radical-Containing Ultrafine Particulate Matter Exacerbates Cardiac Functional Decline Induced by Ischemia-Reperfusion Injury.”
Partnership with Louisiana Dept. of Environmental Quality
The LSU SRP research translation team assisted in planning and presenting the 2014 Louisiana Envirothon held March 8, 2014. Envirothon is an environmental problem-solving competition for students in grades 6-12.Teams train and compete by demonstrating their knowledge of environmental science and natural resource management.
Dr. Tammy Dugas Selected as Vice President of Society of Toxicology Specialty Section
Dr. Tammy Dugas, LSU SRP Oxidative Stress Core leader, was selected as Vice President Elect of the Cardiovascular Toxicology Specialty Section of the Society of Toxicology. The Cardiovascular Toxicology Specialty Section serves to unite cardiovascular toxicologists from academia, government, industry, and the private sector.
LSU SRP Shares Environmental Health Activity for Teachers
LSU SRP trainees and the research translation core attended the 2014 Louisiana Environmental Education Symposium in Shreveport, Louisiana on February 21st-22nd. LSU SRP trainees Elisabeth Feld and Cholena Ren led a combustion chemistry activity using LegosTM to demonstrate the connection between fuel combustion and environmental health issues.
