ANDE SOMBY
Yoiking with the Winged Ones
(Ash International)

The pairing of Norwegian Sámi artist Ánde Somby and sound recordist Chris Watson is a stroke of utter genius. On this evocative record, the otherworldly sounds of the ancient yoik tradition, as performed by Somby, merge with the natural environment within which they were recorded -- chirping birds, gusts of wind -- emphasizing the intrinsic connection between man-made sounds and nature through modern recording technology. Yoiking, which mostly consists of shrieks and guttural utterances, is the oral-musical tradition of the Sámi indigenous people who reside across the North of Europe (i.e. Lapland), and who remain to this day a marginalized source of myth and curiosity for the urban Nordic folk. Somby's vocalization is harsh and sparse, which emphasizes his singular singing-style, holding lengthy pauses in between lines, which makes his interaction with the natural environment all the more striking. KENDRICK LAMAR
untitled unmastered.
(Interscope)

Coming off the steamroller ride of last year's ambitious To Pimp a Butterfly, we get another essential listen from Kendrick Lamar with the unexpected release of untitled unmastered. This eight-track set fits somewhere between a collection of demos, outtakes, studio sketches and a mixtape, all the while remaining a natural extension of his brewing fusion of rap, poetry, jazz, soul, funk, and theatrics. It’s all culled from the same brainstorming sessions that birthed the material on TPAB, alongside some now-completed songs that he debuted on various TV appearances, and includes familiar collaborators such as Kamasi Washington, Anna Wise, Taz Arnold, and Thundercat too, not to mention surprise guest spots from Cee-Lo Green, Adrian Younge, Ali Shaheed Muhammad. VARIOUS ARTISTS
We Are the Works in Progress
(Asa Wa Kuru Records)

Five years since the catastrophic earthquake and tsunami struck Japan, the island nation continues to rebuild. Curated by Blonde Redhead, the proceeds from the sales of We Are the Works in Progress go to the Japan Society and Architecture of Humanity.  A great, diverse range of artists are featured across the double LP, including Four Tet, Karin Dreijer Andersson, Terry Riley, Nosaj Thing, John Roberts, Blonde Redhead (as well as a collaborative track with Liars and Blonde Redhead), Deerhunter, Stalactite, John Maus, David Sylvian & Ryuichi Sakamoto, and Interpol. Perhaps the most notable inclusion, however, comes from Broadcast, whose "In Here the World Begins" was taken from a very rare, out-of-print, tour-only CD and was never before released on vinyl until now.

JOEY NEGRO
Remixed with Love by Joey Negro Vol. 2
(Z Records)

A British producer du jour, David Lee (a/k/a Joey Negro) has created a deep catalogue of remixes, edits, compilations, and DJ sets that continue to shine light on the wealth of amazing soul, disco, boogie, and funk from the 1970s and '80s. With this new collection, Remixed with Love Vol. 2, he once again sculpts some classics and hidden gems into wonderful re-workings. A true vinyl digger and music lover, Lee hunted down each of the track's copyright holders, obtained digital versions of the original master tapes, and then went to work rebuilding these jams from Grace Jones, the O'Jays, Thelma Houston, and many more. THE FEELIES
Only Life
(Bar/None)

Released in 1988, the Feelies' Only Life is one of their most underrated albums. Noticeably different than its two predecessors, the group's third long-player lacks the raw, frenetic nerd-wave energy of their lauded debut, Crazy Rhythms, and the way laid-back, rustic vibe of their amazing second LP, The Good Earth. Instead, Only Life melds the propulsive woven-guitar energy of the former and the detourned folk of the latter, while trading any of the nervousness or woodsy atmosphere for a mellower, cooler confidence, stronger dynamic arrangements, and an overall fuller studio sound. The post-Velvets thing seems to be more pronounced here -- there’s even a cover of “What Goes On”-- but the arrangements and guitar tone have a more distinct rhythm-section feeling as opposed to a ringing high-end chime. It all makes for a solid record full of great songs from a lost time when that was all that mattered in the end. Classic. (Read More)

THE FEELIES
Time for a Witness
(Bar/None

Perhaps the most (criminally) underrated album in the Feelies' discography, the cover art of 1991's Time for a Witness sets the tone by showing all the members chilling together peacefully, sitting on a typical red practice-space rug within a warm, wood-encased room. The image portrays the band as being in no hurry to go anywhere, and just fine being where they are, who they are, and doing their thing. I say this because one of the distinct strengths of Time for a Witness lies in the long, effortless and unhurried grooves found herein. While all of the Feelies' albums are solid, there's a very subtle, non-showy, un-rushed "leap" in style and maturity going on in this record that I don't think it gets credit for. I love them all but this is def one of my faves. Again: CLASSIC. (Read More)

SELDA
Selda
(Finders Keepers)

Back in print! Selda Bagcan made her reputation as a politically outspoken folk singer in the late '60s and early '70s. She established a loyal underground following in Turkey but because of the controversial nature of her lyrics, no label would sign her. In 1975, she finally got the opportunity to record this debut album. Legendary Turkish prog rockers Mogollar and Arif Sag are her backing band here, and together they create one of the most singular sounding psych-folk records ever. Electronically treated guitars and keyboards, filtered acoustic guitars, head-cracking drums, it's all in here. And when you throw in Selda's soaring soprano singing with a rapid-fire delivery that sounds like Joan Baez covering a Sizzla tune …whoa!

BILLY GREEN
Stone OST
(Finders Keepers/B Music)

A great repackaged, remastered repress from Finders Keepers of this ass-kicking soundtrack by Billy Green to the 1974 Australian biker film, Stone. You know that you're in for something special and totally whacked out from the opening "Eco Blue / Toadstrip" -- all buzzing and revving Moogs, rumbling didgeridoos, and wild chiming bells. From there, things kick into heavily ring-modulated funk that reminds me of Annette Peacock's classic I'm the One album, as well as the wild onomatopoeic soundscapes of "Pigs," the skewed rockabilly of "Klaude Kool & the Kats," and oodles of trippy orchestration and unbridled fuzz, best represented by the impressive "Amanda." VARIOUS ARTISTS
Pomegranates
(Finders Keepers/B Music)

Double LP repress! An excellent collection of Iranian/Persian 1960s and '70s psych-pop, folk, and funk jams, compiled by Other Music alumnus Mahssa Taghinia, these are songs of both revolution and evolution, from an era that combined nostalgia for the antiquities of old Iran with a fascination and joy at the arrival of the modern age. The 16 tracks compiled are overflowing with percolating percussion grooves, punchy horns and sweeping string arrangements, while fuzz guitars compete with singers who both croon and grunt with rebellion and abandon. Highlights are aplenty, but Zia's post-James Brown swagger is a sure delight, and special mention must be made of the three outstanding tracks by psych-siren Googoosh. (Read More)
