MBONGWANA STAR
From Kinshasa
(World Circuit)

Formed from the ashes of internationally acclaimed, but now defunct, Congolese group Staff Benda Bilili, Mbongwana Star have made a strong showing with their debut, From Kinshasa. There's a wealth of styles on the album: "Nganshé" resembles a Shangaan Electro take on Kraftwerk's "The Model"; deep groover "Malukayi" features the unmistakable sound of guests Konono No.1; while tracks like Suzanna and Kala come off like Afrofuturist updates of the Chemical Brothers or Leftfield. "Mbongwana" means "change" -- suffice to say, those seeking to explore some fresh musical terrain need look no further. (Read More & Listen)

FIS
The Blue Quicksand Is Going Now
(Loopy)

Following a string of EPs on established labels such as Tri Angle and Exit, New Zealand producer Olly Perryman, a/k/a FIS, delivers 40 minutes of abstracted bliss on his full-length debut for the obscure Loopy label. Weaving together static noise, arcane melody, and collapsing textures, The Blue Quicksand Is Going Now resists exploring an area in between the dance floor and the bedroom, a terrain so many producers seem to be stuck in these days. Instead, Perryman conjures up something altogether different, situated at the threshold of the delirious and the universal. Unlike other, similar explorations of noise and texture, the experience of listening to this beautiful, otherworldly album is an uplifting one, teleporting body and mind beyond time and place. NURSE WITH WOUND
Sylvie and Babs (Expanded Edition)
(Dirter Promotions)

Steven Stapleton is often thought of as a master of the dark and creepy soundscape, but Sylvie and Babs is a horse of quite a different color. Edited together in the studio between 1983 and 1985, the original 1985 LP consisted of two side-long collages created from a mixture of easy listening samples and small contributions from a large cast of collaborators. The result is a jump-cut romp that sounds like a Carl Stalling Looney Tunes soundtrack meets a more-ADD version of The Faust Tapes. From the track titles, "You Walrus Hurt the One You Love" and "Great Balls of Fur," to the contents within, this is one of my favorite albums in Stapleton's giant discography. The second disc includes some unreleased material from the sessions, and remixes by two of the most well-known NWW sympathizers. (Read More)

M.E.S.H.
Piteous Gate
(Pan)

Piteous Gate, James Whipple's second release as M.E.S.H. on Bill Kouligas' continually forward-looking PAN label, is a vivid slash of cyborg futurism disguised as a "traditional" electronic music album. Although the US-born, Berlin-based producer shares a sense of clinical precision and eye for detail with Holly Herndon, M.E.S.H. excavates the darker, more experimental contours of contemporary club culture, oftentimes to such extent that the music seems to be devoid of human presence. Stitching together baroque textures with sci-fi atmospheres, dismantling club tempos, and an overwhelming array of detail reflecting our present condition of sensory/information overload, this is an acute yet abstracted sonorization of the now. Be prepared to be blown to pieces, and to then reassemble yourself with the help of a 3D-scanner. Join the (sonic) man-machine revolution! (Read More & Listen)

HAUNTOLOGISTS
Hauntologists
(Hauntologists)

Debuting in 2008 as an anonymous project, Hauntologists created quite a stir with their no-frills 12"s of deep and psychedelic minimal techno. We've since come to find out that the duo is comprised of Jay Ahern (Hardwax, Modular Cowboy) and Stefan Schneider, and this self-titled LP compiles some of the best moments from their previous singles. Across its 11 tracks, Hauntologists weave through minimal, acid, techno and beyond in a zone not far from Blondes, Baby Ford, or Wolfgang Voigt. Its melodic moments stick out the most though, creating that special balance between music that works equally in a DJ set or at home.

BESOMBES RIZET
Pole
(Gonzai)

Frenchmen Philippe Besombes and Jean-Louis Rizet's one-off 1975 record has been the subject of well-fed collector's mythology. As the price for the original LP steadily increased over the years, this reissue from Gonzai marks a more than welcome apparition. Imagining the most outrageous, drug-induced merging of Klaus Schulze and Heldon hints at the direction in which things are headed here. Most of all, however, Besombes and Rizet carve out a sonic palette entirely of their own making, creating an epic, well-composed trip of hallucinatory imagination. Armed with an impressive battalion of synths, as well as flute, accordion, trumpet, guitar, and vocals, they are occasionally joined by a rhythm section that injects structure to their more experimentally oriented proto-ambient explorations. This definitely sounds like nothing else out there: the good, the bad, and the ugly! (Read More)

ISAIAH OWENS
You without Sin Cast the First Stone
(Mississippi)

Isaiah Owens' debut album from 2004 (released when he was the age of 69) is idiosyncratic gospel at its finest. Owens has long been a gospel singer but didn't pick up the guitar until he was in his 50s. He is entirely self-taught and plays like no one I've ever heard before. He is clearly not afraid of the discordant note; he jabs and twists those strings for the maximum amount of emotional impact and his loud angular strumming screams nothing but the utmost conviction unto the Lord. His voice is as deeply soulful as you'd expect it to be after singing gospel for 40-years. Many of these tracks were culled from gospel radio programs he appeared on in Alabama. Strikingly original, Owens is an amazing discovery who certainly deserves to be heard well beyond whatever radius those radio signals are able to reach. ALBERT HAMMOND JR.
Momentary Masters
(Vagrant)

Strokes guitarist Albert Hammond Jr. returns with his excellent third full-length, renewed after kicking a struggle with addiction and delivering his most personal and enjoyable set yet. All at once reflective and buoyant, hints of his main band are naturally brewing below the surface, from Hammond's great, taut guitar work to the song arrangements -- just add a little dash of Afro-pop here and there, and even a lo-fi cover of Bob Dylan's "Don't Think Twice, It's All Right" complete with a drum machine. Album purchase includes a limited lithograph, while supplies last.
