OTHER MUSIC PRESENTS MONIKA

THURSDAY, JULY 9

Union Pool: 484 Union Ave. Brooklyn, NY
Facebook Event Page  // Free, 21+ w/ID

Monika, the newest member of the Other Music Recording Co. family, will be performing a special show at Union Pool on Thursday, July 9, previewing songs off of her forthcoming album, Secret in the Dark, out this fall. Monika is an electric performer with a pair of platinum albums in her native Greece, but she found a game-changing partner in Homer Steinweiss, of the Dap-Kings and Menahan Street Band, who produced the new record. The pair recorded in Brooklyn with an amazing band of Daptone's best, and made an album inspired by organic, '70s-style leftfield disco, '80s art-pop and a lot more. With a live band led by Steinweiss and featuring many of the Daptone regulars, this special Union Pool performance is sure to be a ton of fun. Brooklyn-based art-pop chanteuse HEIDEMANN opens the evening. Please join us and in the meantime, check out Monika's "Stripping" (off Secret in the Dark), which just premiered on Fader.

HELADO NEGRO
Young, Latin and Proud
(Other Music Recording Co.)

A brand new download-only single from Helado Negro released on Other Music Recording Co., "Young, Latin and Proud" arrives in time for his appearance at Central Park Summer Stage (part of the Latin Alternative Music Conference) next Wednesday, July 8. "'Young, Latin and Proud' is a lullaby, a song of encouragement when you're not really sure if you fit in with your surroundings," says Roberto Carlos Lange a/k/a Helado Negro. "It rocks you to sleep in your space hammock and lets you know to embrace the weird and beautiful that is being Young, Latin and Proud."

VILOD
Safe in Harbour
(Perlon)

This collaborative effort by Ricardo Villalobos and Max Loderbauer, the golden duo of electronic knob wizardry operating here under the newly established Vilod moniker, is a slab of highly original, wickedly inventive electronic jazz, well steeped in minimal and dub techno. Safe in Harbour will prove a very rewarding, bizarre journey in which free improv and technological rigidity constantly collide. Here's to an instant classic of unclassifiable bliss!  (Read More)

VOICES FROM THE LAKE
Live at MAXXI
(Editions Mego)

Following up last year's solo releases on Spectrum Spools, Donato Dozzy and Neel are back at it with a new Voices from the Lake LP via Editions Mego. Live at Maxxi bubbles through ambient techno not unlike that of their legendary self-titled album from a few years back, however, this time around there's a slightly colder sense of texture with more subtle variations in rhythmic activity. From the first whispers to its melodic peak of a closer, this is easily some of the best ambient and techno to hit the shelves this year. (Read More & Listen)

KARIN KROG
Don't Just Sing - An Anthology: 1963-1999
(Light in the Attic)

The prodigious folks of Light in the Attic have taken it upon themselves to put together this exquisite compilation that highlights both Karin Krog's more conventional pop-jazz side as well as her experimental vocal work. Although this Norwegian jazz vocalist was not as revolutionary a spirit, one could nevertheless place Krog alongside other female innovators such as Annette Peacock and Carla Bley, and this much-needed anthology offers to US-based jazz aficionados a crucial, first introduction to her still ongoing musical career. DARKSIDE
Psychic Live
(Matador / Other People)

Filmed on March 21, 2014 in Nantes, France, the entirety of Darkside's Psychic album is performed live (sans the brief "Sitra" interlude) and it makes for a great document of the unique musical chemistry and improvisational approach behind electronic producer Nicolas Jaar and guitarist Dave Harrington's smoky, hypnotic grooves and rich soundcapes. This DVD is limited to just 1000 copies, so don't expect these to be around for too long. (Read More)

PETE ROCK
Petestrumentals 2
(Mello Music Group)

On his long-due follow-up to his solo Petestrumentals album from 2001 released on BBE, Pete Rock hooks up with the Mello Music Group for Volume 2. Across the 20 tracks, the Bronx-born producer flips a few recognizable tunes (David Axelrod, Isaac Hayes) as well as the kind of surprises you'd expect from his years of deep digging through the vinyl bins. Fans of instrumental releases from Madlib, Dilla, Alchemist, Large Professor, and/or DJ Premier should definitely know the name and sound of Pete Rock, a forefather of the '90s boom-bap era.
