OTHER MUSIC PRESENTS MONIKA

THURSDAY, JULY 9

Union Pool: 484 Union Ave. Brooklyn, NY
Facebook Event Page  // Free, 21+ w/ID

Monika, the newest member of the Other Music Recording Co. family, will be performing a special show at Union Pool on Thursday, July 9, previewing songs off of her forthcoming album, out this fall. Monika is an electric performer with a pair of platinum albums in her native Greece, but she found a game-changing partner in Homer Steinweiss, of the Dap-Kings and Menahan Street Band, who produced the new record. The pair recorded in Brooklyn with an amazing band of Daptone's best, and made an album inspired by organic, '70s-style leftfield disco, '80s art-pop and a lot more. With a live band led by Steinweiss and featuring many of the Daptone regulars, this special Union Pool performance is sure to be a ton of fun. Brooklyn-based art-pop chanteuse HEIDEMANN opens the evening. Please join us, and stay tuned for lots more Monika news coming soon!

S. ARAW "TRIO" XI (SUN ARAW)
Gazebo Effect
(Drag City)

Within these lengthy audio collages and extended freak-outs, the latest incarnation of Sun Araw worms its way through an open field of sonics, with plenty of repeated melodies and lots of alien textures. Imagined as a sort of soundtrack to a growing garden and the effects on it after a foreign element is introduced, the aptly titled Gazebo Effect is at times reminiscent of Stevie Wonder's Journey Through the Secret Life of Plants mixed with some Sun Ra-inspired space traveling -- but that said, this is far more psychedelic. BIOSPHERE
Microgravity
(Biophon)

Twenty-four years have passed since Geir Jenssen dropped his genre-defining Microgravity debut for R&S subsidiary Apollo, now reissued by Biophon. This album originally came out right before acts like the Orb, Aphex Twin, Autechre, and the Future Sound of London started altering the outlook of dance music forever. By all means, this is an ambient cult classic, which would not only come to influence the above-mentioned household names, but it would also carve out a soon-to-become ubiquitous chill-out music trope. Microgravity simply is an essential acquisition to anyone even marginally interested in the rich, varied history of electronic dance music, this expanded two-disc edition giving a rare insight into some of the materials that didn’t make the original cut. HELM
Olympic Mess
(Pan)

Luke Younger's experimental electronic project Helm has been steadily developing and evolving over the past few years. With ties to the avant-garde community via Graham Lambkin's Kye label and the punk world through tours with Iceage, Helm's sound draws from all corners of the DIY underground without wholly succumbing to one. Younger might as well be considered a sound design scientist at this point, however, layering fragments of seemingly disjointed textures and spinning them into lush drones and sonic blankets. ALCEU VALENCA
Molhado de Suor
(Sol Re Sol)

Alceu Valença has made a long career in Brazilian pop music, mixing the sounds of his native northeast town of Pernambuco with modern pop melodies and an accessible approach. Molhado de Suor blends folk styles with a sense of adventurous arrangement and wild, soulful sounds that make themselves more evident as the record goes on. Released in 1974, it's entirely possible that Valença had heard the Faces, Ry Cooder, and lots of Philly soul records, and boiled their influences down into his own creation. (Read More & Listen)

BLACK MOUNTAIN
Black Mountain (10th Anniversary Deluxe Edition)
(Jagjaguwar)

I can't believe it's been 10 years since this record dropped and injected the indie scene's vein with some seriously psychedelic and stoned jams. Led by Pink Mountaintops' Stephen McBean, Black Mountain debuted with this rollicking, '70s-tinged rock n' roll tour de force; borrowing vintage tropes from the likes of Neil Young, Black Sabbath, Incredible String Band and beyond, the eponymous album flipped the reference points upside down by way of skronking millennial angst and an affinity for modern psych groups like Royal Trux. A lost but not forgotten classic, this deluxe version includes a bunch of bonus tracks and sounds just as great. (Read More & Listen)

GEORGE THEODORAKIS
The Rules of the Game (Original Studio Recordings 1978-1996)
(Into the Light)

The son of legendary film composer Mikis Theodorakis, most famous for penning the soundtrack to Zorba the Greek, George Theodorakis had access to his father's pristine studio equipment and, most importantly, an abundance of time to experiment. Tracks such as "Life and Intercourse," which includes a deliciously rolling bass and Balearic beat combined with sun-soaked Harmonia-like pastoral vistas, and "Milky Ways," an esoteric sounding intergalactic journey including bizarre synthesized vocals, prove the diversity of the material collected here, some of it produced for TV or theater. DJ KOZE
DJ-Kicks
(K7)

The celebrated DJ-Kicks series was born in Berlin so perhaps it's fitting that they chose German producer DJ Koze to mix this special 50th installment. Indeed, Koze offers a lot of exclusive edits and blends in this great selection that travels from hip-hop to house, with plenty of nice, unexpected detours in between. (Read More & Listen)

THE ORB
Moonbuilding 2703 AD
(Kompakt)

Moonbuilding 2703 AD has far more in common with the Orb's classic early-'90s output than it does with their previous (and only other) Kompakt LP, 2005's Okie Dokie. Their strongest work has always been the longer tracks that allow room for experimentation, and Moonbuilding benefits by being comprised of four side-long pieces. While the first three-quarters of the album stays within the broad parameters of the Orb's combination of dubby techno and atmospheric psychedelia, the closing title track takes an unexpected turn into hip-hop territory. The bonus 12" included with the limited vinyl version confirms this influence, as it features a tribute to J Dilla. (Read More & Listen)

MATCHESS
Somnaphoria
(Trouble in Mind)

A seriously incredible new LP from Whitney Johnson (a/k/a Matchess) that's probably more suited for a modern classical or electro-pop label than Trouble in Mind, but somehow fits the roster's blissed and nostalgic aesthetic. Drawing from a pool of influences as seemingly disparate as Suicide, Steve Reich, Leslie Winer, and Van Dyke Parks, Matchess' sound is a lovely melding of underwater synth tones, minimal drum programming, processed vocals and lush strings arrangements. BRUCE BRUBAKER
Glass Piano
(Infine)

This album of Philip Glass interpretations by Bruce Brubaker is a fine introduction to the master's idiosyncratic mode of composing, which, as is well known by now, consists of an opening up of repetitive music towards harmony, rhythmic subtlety, and textual rigor. The music is recorded using close microphones, and this approach makes for a truly intimate recording session in which you can hear Brubaker occasionally breathe along with his fluid piano movements. DAVID TOOP
Lost Shadows: In Defence of the Soul - Yanomami Shamanism, Songs, Ritual, 1978
(Sub Rosa)

Consisting of field recordings made during his 1978 journey to the Peruvian Amazonian forest, David Toop devotedly documented the at-the-time disappearing Yanomami tribes, their shamanistic ceremonies, ritual songs, as well as the atmospheres of their environs. Remarkably, the Yanomami musical universe fascinates by a lack of instrumentation. A disquieting, feverish audiosphere, Lost Shadows consists of relentless grunting, snorting, burping, barking, sneezing, spitting, howling. This is the music of spirits, of people possessed by spirits and animals, of ventriloquial hallucinations, of sounds captured in uncharted, dark spaces. The closing track of night insects, birds, and moths hardly brings relief from this frantic, fascinating sonic hallucination, as Lost Shadows presents an unsurpassed spectacle of cosmic and auditory grandeur. NILS FRAHM
Solo
(Erased Tapes)

Solo collects eight transcendent, bare-skinned piano pieces, each recorded in one take with Nils Frahm improvising every selection on a gigantic Klavins M370 created by piano maker David Klavins. A deliberate and successful exercise in technical restraint, the sense of warmth that emanates from these meditative compositions is at once grounding and cosmic. For fans of John Cage, Erik Satie, Harold Budd, et al., a portion of the record sales will help support various piano projects, including the building of the world's tallest piano, the Klavins 450. NILS FRAHM
Music for the Motion Picture Victoria
(Erased Tapes)

For his first film soundtrack, Nils Frahm enlisted cellist Anne Müller, violist Viktor Orri Árnason, and Deaf Center guitarist Erik K. Skodvin. Recorded in Berlin's former GDR broadcasting production facilities that today houses Studio P4, this gorgeous, tranquil score was born from the musicians improvising together in real time to the movie, which was playing on a continuous loop. The soundtrack has already received a Deutscher Filmpreis nomination for Best Score, and also includes an edit of DJ Koze's "Burn with Me."
