WIN HELADO NEGRO TICKETS

SUNDAY, OCTOBER 25

Baby's All Right: 146 Broadway, Brooklyn

Coming off a two-week tour that's taken him across much of the US, Helado Negro (a/k/a Roberto Lange) returns to his home base of Brooklyn this Sunday to perform a special show at Baby's All Right. We've been big fans of this producer, singer, multi-instrumentalist's gentle, textured fusion of electronic, dream-pop and Latin-music influences, and even released his download single of "Young, Latin and Proud" on our Other Music Recording Co. label this past summer. You won't want to miss this performance, not to mention special guest opener Buscabullla. Email enter@othermusic.com for your chance to win!

JOANNA NEWSOM
Divers
(Drag City)

Her first album in five years, Joanna Newsom's Divers is a pristine set, rich with history, myths, and love. Joined by longtime co-producer Noah Georgeson and Steve Albini in the studio, with arrangements coming from contributors like Nico Muhly and Dirty Projector's Dave Longstreth, these are the most fascinating stories and lyrics that the singer, songwriter and harpist has ever put forth, with Newsom re-appropriating 19th century poet Percy Shelley's Ozymandias during the byzantine "Sapokanikan" or creating new words like "simulacreage" during "Waltz of the 101st Lightborne." Yet for as vivid, mysterious and fantastical as Newsom's tales are, the human condition always comes through loud and clear. I, for one, can't stop listening and I don't think I'll be able to any time soon. (Read More & Listen)

POLE
Wald
(Pole)

With his new full-length album as Pole, German glitch conceptualist Stefan Betke reboots his career with clarity and bravura. If Basic Channel established a hugely influential template for dub techno, then Pole, with his first three, late-1990s classic ambient albums, built upon these achievements with an equally persuasive fusing of low-pitched dub and static fizzle. Quite excitingly, Wald finds Betke expanding both the emotional and sonic qualities of his music, resulting in an entirely fresh sounding aesthetic approach. Inspired by long walks through the forest, a well-known trope of German culture, the album goes from an exploration of spatiality to raw sounds and structures in three beautifully sequenced acts. WHITE BOIZ
Neighborhood Wonderful
(Stones Throw)

A new project featuring producer Shafiq Husayn (Sa-Ra, Erykah Badu, Kendrick Lamar) and MC Krondon (Strong Arm Steady), White Boiz is the latest addition to the ever-growing Stones Throw family. Featuring a colorful cast that includes Thundercat, the Stepkids, Anderson Paak, Blu, and Chace Infinite, to name a few, the group creates a groove-based journey full of hip-hop, jazz, funk, soul and Afrobeat across these 14 songs, and ultimately paints a vivid portrait of the modern inner city, focusing on the beauty, strength, wealth and complexities to be found within. NEON INDIAN
Vega Intl. Night School
(Mom + Pop)

To say that Neon Indian's Alan Palomo is taken with '80s music is an understatement. As one of the earliest and strongest voices of chillwave -- a sub-genre already obsessed with the earmarks of that decade -- Palomo's Neon Indian went beyond the silky/synthy surfaces of that era to reveal some strong songwriting acumen. But then he dropped off the map for four years. Earlier this summer he announced the return of Neon Indian with the surprise release of "Annie," which revealed that Palomo was also well-versed in "Balearic" (yet another glossy yet catchy strain of sunny '80s pop). Now comes the full-length Vega Intl. Night School and it's his strongest album to date, one that refocuses all the highlights of Psychic Chasms and Era Estrana into laser lights. TRUST IMAGE
Rory's World
(1080p)

Pulling from the golden era of '90s greats like Metalheadz, Photek, and LTJ Bukem, Trust Image's second cassette not only captures the formal structure of the genre, but also the vibrant spirit and energy that made it so magnetic. Not satisfied to merely copy the UK school, however, he also incorporates influences from more contemporary styles like bass and trap to add some modernist touches. Fans of '90s revivalist Lee Bannon as well as tried-and-true keepers of the jungle flame like Zomby or Special Request shouldn't hesitate. (Read More & Listen)

ELLEN FULLMAN
The Long String Instrument
(Superior Viaduct)

An absolutely incredible archival reissue of a landmark conceptual art/sound/thought piece dating back to 1981-era New York City, The Long String Instrument is a recording of a playable sculpture invented and built by Ellen Fullman. The original performances consisted of Fullman playing a variety of 70-foot-long metallic wires, with her rosin-coated fingers gliding slowly up and down the strings as she walked steadily through the gallery space. The drone-like effect sounds almost organ- or piano-like and is very soothing. With minimal overdubs, The Long String Instrument remains a masterpiece of modern composition and should definitely sit alongside works by La Monte Young, Arnold Dreyblatt, Charlemagne Palestine, and the U.S. Steel Cello Ensemble. L. VOAG
The Way Out
(Superior Viaduct)

Superior Viaduct is at it again, shining light on another fantastic if overlooked work by reissuing The Way Out, a solo record by Jim Welton, bassist of influential D.I.Y. group the Homosexuals. Arty, damaged, and supremely playful, The Way Out unfolds over 18 short songs/vignettes and sonic sketches. The LP is arguably divided in two halves and presented as such: the first, an idiosyncratic rumination on domestic life and personal identity; the latter, a reflection on the limits of stylistic synthesis as Welton constructs a maze of music and culture churned through an incredible pastiche of idioms (rock, jazz, modern composition, tape collage, etc.). While not a rock record per se, The Way Out should appeal to fans of unconventional rock, outsider pop and experimental composition, as it integrates each in a way that has seldom collided so uniquely together ever since. FUZZ
II
(In the Red)

"Fuzz has abandonment issues. Abandoning expectation. Abandoning reservation, consummation, resignation and trite dictation. Instinct is all there is when it comes to the divination of harsh salvation. Segall, Moothart and Ubovich are exploring all the blank-ations of what will be, or has always been, Fuzz II. Tried and true methods mixed with tongue-twisting, teeth-shattering, seizure-inducing stabs at the norm. Who knows… maybe that’s wrong. Maybe it’s all done. Played out. Maybe it’s not for want of new but for lack of old. But probably not. Bathe in the heat wave that is Fuzz, and regret nothing in the time freeze."  (Read More)

BILL ORCUTT & JACOB FELIX HEULE
Colonial Donuts
(Palilalia)

"Guitarist Bill Orcutt and drummer Jacob Felix Heule (Ettrick, Fred Frith, Sult) have been performing regularly around the San Francisco Bay Area since 2012, but this is their first release together. Recorded in Orcutt's living room in the early months of 2015 and named after a chain of Oakland coffee shops, Colonial Donuts collects 13 compact, stylistically diverse duets for electric guitar and drums, ranging from hushed, socially anxious folk to sprung electric blues to dense, pummeling free improvisation. Mixed by Frank Falestra at Dan Hosker Studios in Miami Beach; mastered by James Plotkin; designed by Bill Orcutt."

HONGTHONG DAO-UDON
Bump Lam Phloen: Essential Hongthong Dao-udon
(Em Records)

"This collection contains the very best songs from Hongthong Dao-udon, one of the great Thai singers of the "third generation" of Molam singers and one of the artists who succeeded in fusing Molam with Luk Thung, thus triggering a new generation of singers; in fact, she was the first to sing both genres from the beginning of her career, considering herself to be situated happily between the two styles. But none of this matters, finally, to the listener. This is music, not musicology, and Hongthong Dao-udon sings to us, not the pedants. Her career was brief, and these songs from the late '70s and early '80s are her very best, showcasing her rich vibrato, her masterful control, and the undeniable emotional power of her voice, and carrying us from joy and whimsy to melancholy and desolation." MILD HIGH CLUB
Timeline
(Circle Star)

"Mild High Club is a wayward home for the musical output of Alexander Brettin & the band. The group's first single "Windowpane" came out earlier this year on Stones Throw, and they've been on tour for nearly the whole year. "
