this week's update

SLEAFORD MODS
Key Markets
(Harbinger Sound)

With a new album on a new American label, confrontational Nottingham rap/post-punk duo Sleaford Mods take the boot off your throat just a bit, and come up with their most musically-expansive, genuinely fun (and funny) record to date. Following the pressurized assault of Austerity Dogs and Divide & Exit, vocalist Jason Williamson finds himself in a bit more of a playful mood. He's still angry as hell, but as the Mods has taken off a bit commercially, he finds himself outside the cubicle and more willing to cut up on London mayor Boris Johnson, the horror shelf at the video store, and bloated pop celebrities. SEVEN DAVIS JR.
Universes
(Ninja Tune)

The Ninja Tune debut from producer and vocalist Seven Davis Jr. is finally here after years of Bandcamp releases, sporadic compilation one-offs, and remixes. Coming out of a sonic tradition that ranges from the '80s funk of Prince and George Clinton to the thumping fusion of Moodymann and Theo Parrish, Davis creates a nice, cosmic-leaning blend of soulful house and leftfield R&B. Recommended to fans of the above-mentioned, the Internet, Sa-Ra, Funkineven, or Dam-Funk. Deluxe CD version comes with four bonus tracks. (Read More & Listen)

MICHAEL SENA
Bali High OST
(Anthology Recordings)

Killer soundtrack madness from Michael Sena -- a Kauai-based cat whose film works in the late '70s were not only highly appraised but have never been restored, polished and reissued until now! A mish-mash of '70s-inspired lounge rock ("Ride"), tropical boogie weirdness ("Reggae Blood"), and classic, soft surf sounds ("Winter"), it's fascinating to reflect on the fact that this collection of songs was written, recorded and produced in three months (!) entirely by Sena himself. A total summertime jammer with a lot of replay value, this score is a testament to the artistic energy of that era. Features 26 tracks over two LPs, with a beautiful sleeve design and exclusive liner notes!

DUCKTAILS
St. Catherine
(Domino)

St. Catherine is the fifth full-length from guitarist Matt Mondanile's Ducktails, a side-project whose output now exceeds that of his main band Real Estate. He's left the nebulous, seaside jams of his debut behind for more traditional song structures, and St. Catherine continues along the path laid down by recent records like The Flower Lane and III: Arcade Dynamics. The best songs, "Headbanging in the Mirror," "Into the Sky," "Surreal Exposure" and the Julia Holter-assisted "Church," allude to '80s indie pop à la the Go-Betweens, the Colourfield, and Aztec Camera, but with a more restrained approach. This is an album that sounds deceptively simple upon initial spins but you'll find the tracks slithering their way into heavy brain rotation in no time. (Read More)

PEACERS
Peacers
(Drag City)

Debut album from Mike Donovan, one-half of Sic Alps, sees him in the studio with Ty Segall to create a record that both disposes of the tension present in Sic Alps' collaborative work, and finds the artist in a much more focused, genre-specific '60s folk/rock/psych bag. Imagine if those last few White Fence records had removed themselves of the letter-perfect revivalism of the era and just let that freak flag fly, man; you're almost exactly where Peacers is setting up camp: bite-sized truths from "wavy dudes" that play to a satisfyingly sloppy idea. As summer roils on, this just might be what you need to keep you going. (Read More & Listen)

LOOP
Array 1 EP
(Reactor)

A much-welcomed return from Loop, who are back with their first studio release in 25 years! Although group co-founder/guitarist Robert Hampson is the only original member on this four-song EP, there's no mistaking these sprawling psychedelic space-rock sounds as coming from anyone else but Loop. Old fans along with fans of Psychic Ills, Wooden Shjips, et al. shouldn't hesitate on this great comeback EP. (Read More & Listen)

DJ RASHAD
6613 EP
(Hyperdub)

Much like J-Dilla, DJ Rashad has become a much-loved, deeply missed producer in the urban music community since his untimely passing, with more and more ears hearing his music and unreleased tracks continuing to see the light of day. 6613 is the latest collection to be gathered from his archive and it's a strong reminder of why he was such a great talent. Four tracks in all with three featuring DJ Spinn, two with Taso, and one each with Gant-Man and DJ Manny, these are solid examples of the chaotic beauty that footwork can produce. Proceeds go to help Rashad's surviving family. (Read More)

JESSY LANZA, DJ SPINN & TASO
You Never Show Your Love EP
(Hyperdub)

One of our favorite women on the Hyperdub label, Jessy Lanza teams up with Chicago's Teklife crew and returns with a nice little gem of new-school electronic soul. You Never Show Your Love is produced by DJ Spinn and Taso, yet you might not know it upon first listen. The hyper footwork rhythms and chopped-up samples that the crew is known for has been nicely smoothed out to a slow-and-steady pace, with clean bass thumps, crispy cymbals, and a hip-swaying rhythm. Think of a Janet Jackson or Aaliyah-styled slow jam and you'll get the emotion and references at play here. (Read More)

LONE
Lemurian
(R&S)

Seven years have passed since Matt Cutler, a/k/a Lone, released his debut full-length Lemurian on the now defunct Dealmaker label, an occasion as good as any for his current stable, R&S, to release this newly remastered version. So, the big question is: does the album pass the test of time? Luckily for us, it does. Even though Cutler has significantly expanded his style and compositional approach over the years, this is somewhat of a cult-classic of sun-drenched, instrumental hip-hop, watery synth-washes, and expertly executed electro-twists. It also comes with way better cover art, and is pressed on pink vinyl! (Read More & Listen)

SK KAKRABA
Yonye
(Sun Ark)

Yonye is a brand new recording from Ghanaia's SK Kakraba, who not only builds his own gyils (a Ghanaian xylophone that is made entirely of wood -- 14 slabs to be exact), but has also developed a uniquely abstract style that draws from both African and Western traditional music. A master of the gyil, Kakraba's virtuosic playing could almost be described as chunky, melding a rhythmic pulse with abstract tone clusters. Tracks like "Pirifu" sound almost distorted in their intensity -- think a more acoustic Congotronics -- while others are traditionally sparse, utilizing techniques of Lobi musicians past. MARTIN REV
Clouds of Glory
(Permanent)

Originally released in 1985, Martin Rev's excellent second solo album is back in print on vinyl for its 30th anniversary, courtesy of Permanent Records. Recorded and released during a hiatus from Suicide, Clouds of Glory is an entirely instrumental LP, built from Rev's trademarked synthesizers and drum machine. Recommended! (Read More & Listen)

For the album Souleyman opened his doors to collaborations with a number of renowned electronic producers, all of whom were established fans eager to offer unique interpretations of his sound. THE NATIONAL
A Lot of Sorrow
(4AD)

"On 5th May 2013, the National collaborated with Icelandic artist Ragnar Kjartansson on A Lot of Sorrow, a durational performance presented as part of MoMA PS1's Sunday Sessions. Kjartansson, who often uses repetitive performance to explore collective experience and emotion, invited the National to play their three-minute, twenty-five second song 'Sorrow' live on stage, repeatedly and continuously, for six hours. Featuring nine pieces of clear vinyl in clear sleeves held in a translucent, screen printed box, all profits will be donated to Partners in Health, an organization dedicated to improve the health of impoverished people worldwide." (Limited to 1500 copies.)

STRANGE WILDS
Subjective Concepts
(Sub Pop)

"Strange Wilds slays with the hellish fury of the Northwest hardcore scene's best, the heavenly scuzz of a Bleach-era Nirvana, and the purgatorial punishment of Touch & Go post-rock meets Devo's de-evolution machine. The 11 songs here bleed with the hybrid DNA of Seattle's past and future, disparate scenes fused together with sneering menace and intelligent fury in equal shares. Some songs plow through the thick fog of sludge and dirge, while others soar and speed along at breakneck pace." (Read More)

VINYL WILLIAMS
Into
(Company)

"Lionel Williams leaves behind the murkier lo-fi production of his 2012 debut full-length, Lemniscate, for the somnambulant pop of Into. The new album -- on Chaz Bundick's (Toro Y Moi, Les Sins) Company Records -- moves Lionel's Vinyl Williams alias into a more vivid, multi-colored dream world. Unlike the dramatic film scores of his grandfather (famed composer and conductor John Williams), this 25-year-old Los Angeles-based musician's songs are far more introspective, effortlessly blending ambient, electronic, Krautrock, psychedelia and shoegaze influences into a uniquely visceral listening experience that often mirrors the surrealism of his own collage-based visual artwork."

KAWABATA MAKOTO
Astro Love & Infinite Kisses
(VHF)

"Kawabata Makoto emerges from a period of relative quiet with his first widely available solo release in several years, the blockbuster Krautrock-flavored Astro Love & Infinite Kisses. This lovely and impressionistic record showcases the other side of Makoto's outrageous works with Acid Mothers Temple. Taking cues from classics of the genre like Tangerine Dream's Phaedra and Steve Hillage's Rainbow Dome Musick, "Dos Nurages" is the album's centerpiece, a 41-minute hypnotic epic, with echoplex'd guitar anchoring a stream of expertly done glissando. The title track is a darker drone in the tradition of Kawabata's Inui series of releases for VHF. "Woman From Dream Island" closes the record with a thick buzz of tamboura overlaid with trippy backwards guitar, before giving way to a gentle, finger-picked acoustic coda."

GRAVE BABIES
Holographic Violence
(Hardly Art)

"Grave Babies has long held a crush on morbidity, death, and corruption, building a romantic relationship around the juxtaposition of the dark contextual matter with hook-heavy songs rife with pretty melodies and harmonies. The 11 new songs on Holographic Violence present this powerful combination from a science fiction perspective, begging the question: has our imagination outpaced the confines of our reality as we keep going down the same path, believing there's hope? Playing anthemic pop songs with a strange male choir-esque sound to the vocals adds a distinctly cultish feel to the abrasive exercise of figuring out if it is possible to circumvent destructive human predispositions."
