EZTV
Calling Out
(Captured Tracks)

A good power trio is hard to find: a band whose minimal approach still approximates the bombastic rock moves of arena rockers or just three players who intuitively play off each other's strengths and keep it simple and strong. Brooklyn power poppers EZTV exemplify this particular type of rock 'n' roll status by spinning deceptively simple motifs into killer AM radio anthems. In the great tradition of '90s bands like Teenage Fanclub or Lemonheads who updated the heart-on-your-sleeve pop sound of Flaming Groovies, Badfinger or the Raspberries, EZTV carry the torch into the new millennium, with a groovy rocking energy and hooks for days. FOUR TET
Morning / Evening
(Text)

At first glance, you might think that Morning / Evening is just the latest entry in a string of adventurous singles that have seen Four Tet dabble in 2 step, house, and even make a banger out of a J. Lo sample, but M/E is in fact Kieran Hebden's most expansive and ambitious album to date. Each side clocks in at 20 minutes and draws on his love for Indian ragas, spiritual jazz, early electronic composition, and new age music. Fans of Hebden who have followed his many moves over the course of his career will no doubt see M/E as the summation of the man's many skills. (Read More)

CHERRYSTONES
Critical Mass / Splinters from the Worldwide New-Wave, Post-Punk and Industrial Underground 1978-1984
(Touch Sensitive)

A testament to post-punk's ever forward-looking urges, this exhilarating compilation of lesser known gems by London-based DJ Cherrystones hits the right spot from the onset. Opening frenetically with Rheingold's "FanFanFanatisch," which combines punk's energy with Kling Klang's electronic experimentation, it is followed with just under an hour of the most obscure, deconstructionist bliss. This collection ultimately reads like a call to "rip it up and start again," rather than one that merely celebrates some far gone wicked musical imagination from an out-of-reach past. HEATHER WOODS BRODERICK
Glider
(Western Vinyl)

Better known for her role in Sharon Van Etten's current band and stints with Efterklang, Heather Woods Broderick's newest album brings a slightly different approach to the same bluesy melancholia found in her work with Sharon, while being decidedly more abstract. Much of Glider builds on a bare-bones aesthetic of plainly played piano or guitar, with her wavering baritone vocals lending a heavy emotional weight. A very intriguing listen from start to finish, with a lot of space and atmosphere surrounding the songs, Glider will definitely appeal to fans of everything from Grouper's last record to Balearic '80s pop to lonesome country and beyond. ALICE COLTRANE
Universal Consciousness
(Superior Viaduct)

This LP-reissue of Alice Coltrane's ultimate, 1971 classic functions as a pathway to unlimited consciousness, the record's music fulfilling all aspects of its hyperbolic title. Imagine a cloud bathing in dim sunlight that hovers atop a world of thundering misery and hardship, and you can start mapping out the singularity of the music presented here. On that cloud, harpist and organist Alice Coltrane is joined by spiritual soul mates such as bassist Jimmy Garrison, drummers Rashied Ali and Jack DeJohnette, string arranger Ornette Coleman (!), and a whole battalion of musical consciousness seekers producing sounds drowned in dissonant textures and otherworldly harmonics. BILAL
In Another Life
(E One)

Unlike many contemporary soul artists who are indebted to the sound of the '60s and '70s, Bilal has always shown a deep understanding of the past as well as the present, never seeming to let himself get stuck in nostalgia or lost in the future. His albums always ride the lines between hip-hop, soul and vocal jazz, and with In Another Life he continues to grow as a singer and songwriter while welcoming guests like Kendrick Lamar, Kimbra, and Big K.R.I.T. Fans of Jose James, Miguel, Leon Bridges, etc. should check out what Bilal has been up to, as he's definitely an under-the-radar sort of artist that always finds his voice in the right places and with good company. FEAR RATIO
Refuge of a Twisted Soul
(Skam)

Though they're both known as heavyweights of straight techno, James Ruskin and Mark Broom use their Fear Ratio project to explore other strands of rhythmic electronic music. The tempos here are generally halftime but punctuated by poly-rhythmic activity that keeps things propulsive, and some of the tracks have an Autechre vibe, albeit without as much ADD. Sci-fi ambience and heavy sub-bass keeps the mood dark, and there's a sense of compositional prowess evident throughout. File this one next to Gescom, Bola and Boards of Canada among the label's high points. (Read More & Listen)

CHELSEA WOLFE
Live at Roadburn
(Outer Battery)

Those wanting an appetizer in anticipation of Chelsea Wolfe's new LP (due August 7th) would be wise to get a hold of this very limited reissue of 2012's vinyl-only Live at Roadburn. The eight tracks, mostly culled from her 2010 record Apokalypsis, were performed in front of an adoring crowd at the Roadburn festival in the Netherlands. At times, the live band transforms these insular doom/folk songs into something closer to psychedelic blues, while never overshadowing Wolfe's impressive pipes. For the uninitiated, this is a fitting entry into the dusky realm of this rising, underground star.

SON LUX
Bones
(Glassnote)

Ryan Lott's first record on Glassnote (and fourth LP in four years) is yet another lush, colorful experiment in avant-pop that will perhaps even draw a whole new crowd into Son Lux's realm. While the works of Sisyphus, Lott's trio super-group with Sufjan Stevens and Serengeti, were great efforts, it's clear that Son Lux finds his best sound in the shape of a solo project, where he can dominate the beats, synths, and lyrics all himself. Bones is reminiscent of early 2010s hits like Bath's Obsidian and POLIÇA's Shulamith, so any fan of that realm of indie pop will certainly not be disappointed by Son Lux's work. (Read More)

RICHARD THOMPSON
Still
(Fantasy)

Nearly 50 years after he debuted with Fairport Convention, Richard Thompson continues to make vital, powerful music. Still was produced by Wilco's Jeff Tweedy and features subtle contributions from him and guitarist James Elkington, among others, but the record is rightly focused on Thompson and his flexible trio, with little getting in the way of a crisp and clear mix. If you've let some of Thompson's recent efforts pass you by, Still is a good place to hop back on board, filled with finely detailed character studies, effortlessly timeless melodies and, of course, plenty of Thompson's miraculous, virtuosic guitar work. JULEE CRUISE
Floating into the Night
(Plain)

Floating into the Night, the 1989 debut album by American chanteuse Julee Cruise, was unique and unsettling upon its release, and today its impact has proven more lasting than ever. Written, arranged, and produced by maestro Angelo Badalamenti and auteur David Lynch, many of its tracks were featured in Lynch's then-newly airing TV series Twin Peaks. The atmospheres Cruise, Lynch, and Badalamenti conjure here have gone on to inspire countless dream-pop bands, shadowed crooners, and nostalgic spacey noir jazzers straight into the present day. JOANNA GRUESOME
Peanut Butter
(Slumberland)

It seems rare these days for a band that starts out with a penchant for scrappy, noisy, punkish rock 'n' roll dynamics to stay in that realm for a second album, but with Peanut Butter, Welsh quintet Joanna Gruesome have not only done that, they've cranked their most extreme elements even further to the front. That, and everything else that made their debut Weird Sister stand out: power-strum riffs, angelic Lush-style vocals, spring-loaded melodies straight out of the C86 playbook. Peanut Butter doubles down on it all, transposing a Sarah/early Creation/My Bloody Valentine sort of sensibility, a la dreamy pop supercharged with blastbeats, dissonant chords and near crust-punk levels of distortion and chaos, ricocheting around your head and heart. SURGEON
Tresor 97-99
(Tresor)

Tresor's new eponymous box set from legendary UK producer and DJ Surgeon compiles three of his best albums for the Berlin-based label: Basictonalvocabulary, Balance, and Force + Form, all of which have seen reissues from the label as double LPs through this past year. All of the tracks have been remastered, and the care given to this task sheds a new light on the development of the Birmingham sound pioneered by Surgeon (among others) during the late '90s.

EEK
Kahraba
(Nashazphone)

"Kahraba is the debut studio album of Islam Chipsy's EEK. Recorded in late 2014 in downtown Cairo, it contains four tracks perfectly representing Chipsy's wild and inimitable artistic spectrum, ranging from the frenzied sound signature technique that brought him his fame ("Trinity" and "Kahraba") to the band's individual maneuverings of typical Egyptian standards such as the Northeastern Nile delta "Simsimiyya" in "El-Bawaba" or Upper Egypt's traditional "Mouled Saidi" in "Mouled El-Ghoul."
