This month, we've got a news-y update from our Director, Dr. Vivienne Conway to let you know about what's happening in the world of digital accessibility at the moment.

From the Director

I am so pleased to have a chance to let everyone know of some exciting things happening in digital accessibility, both here in Australia and internationally. I thought that this month, I’d use this newsletter to let you know about some of these events.

Australian Access Awards 2019

The inaugural Australian Access Awards will be held on Thursday, 12 December, and you’ll find a link below to get tickets for this event.  Please consider coming and supporting the nominees and enjoying time with your colleagues.  Web Key IT are delighted to be one of the sponsors of the awards, and we consider it exciting to honour those who are working so hard in promoting digital inclusivity.

New ISO Standard Released

A new ISO standard, ISO 30071-1 has been released.  This ISO Standard is replacing the British Standard, BS 8878. In effect, this ISO standard puts the former BS 8878 into an international form and is aimed at the creation of digital products. I am in contact with Jonathan Hassell to see how we might best use this best in Australia.  Jonathan has made a 71 second video about the new standard and how you can use it: How to Embed ISO 30071-1 Into Your Organisation. We will be providing you more information on this new ISO Standard and how you can use it.  However, to keep this brief, ISO 30071-1 is a “Code of practice for creating accessible ICT products and services”.  It is a ‘how to’, which has been led by Jonathan Hassell who was also involved with the BS 8878.  It does not replace standards such as WCAG, but it puts it into a framework that can be used throughout the organisation.  We will be sure to send you more information in the coming months. In the meantime, you might want to read more about it at: ISO 30071-1 digital accessibility standard, all you need to know

Our Work in the Middle East

We are excited to announce that there will be a Conference in Kuwait in January 2020 featuring Web Key IT and W3C guests.  I will be headed over there to present and will be accompanied by Zel Iscel, one of our very well-known Usability Testers.  Zel will be presenting at the Conference, leading workshops for blind users on how they can use digital material such as websites, and presenting to some of our clients in Kuwait on ways they can provide better services for their users.  Needless to say, Zel is pretty excited about the trip and is working hard on getting a number of presentations ready.  I’ll be sure to include some pictures when we return.

Australian Accessibility Conference (formerly OZeWAI and the Perth Web Accessibility Camp)

We are very excited that OZeWAI Australian Accessibility Conference (OZeWAI and PWAC) will be in Perth in February 2020.  Proposals are now being accepted at Conference Proposals , and we’d love to see lots of WA presenters participating.  There will be 3 days of activities:

                Day 1 – Accessibility 101
Day 2 – Global and Australian Standards and Policies
                Day 3 - Development Day
We will provide more news soon about the presentations and guest speakers, so keep tuned.  In the meantime, please considering coming, presenting, and of course if you’d like to be a sponsor, you’re very welcome to do that through the: Conference Sponsorship Link .

Curtin University Project

We were honoured to work with students from Curtin University on their Information Systems and Technology Project during semester 2, this year. This final year project pairs students about to step into the workforce with organisations and companies to give the real life experience of working on a particular IT project. We worked with two fantastic teams during the last several months on two separate projects. Congratulations to both teams for their hard work. Keep an eye on our YouTube page for the usability testing videos one team did with our team of usability analysts.
