Summer Meals Program Spotlight

SFSP claim system is open

The Summer Food Service Program claim system is open in the Colorado Nutrition Portal for sponsors to submit reimbursement claims for meals served under the SFSP. All SFSP meals served in the months of June, July and August must be claimed in the Colorado Nutrition Portal under SFSP (red tile). If the red tile does not appear in your sponsor account, use the New User Request form to request access to the SFSP module. The claiming process was streamlined to allow sponsors to submit sponsor-level claims throughout program year 2020 for the SFSP, and we appreciate your patience while the system was updated. Please reference the claim instructions and view this short video on how to submit a sponsor level claim.

Summer Meals Program Updates

USDA Foods: loss of products reimbursement

Many school districts are receiving the Colorado Department of Human Services reimbursement checks due to the statewide loss of commodities. The School Nutrition Unit is tracking these CDHS payments similar to the normal U.S. Department of Agriculture Foods (Commodities) process. School districts can report the amount of the check received as both revenue, source code 4010, and expenditure, object code 0633. Payments will be included within the USDA Foods (Commodity) check figure report for the 2019-20 fiscal year that will be posted to CDE’s School Finance website soon.

Pandemic-EBT training opportunities and updated resources

Join the School Nutrition unit on Thursday, Aug. 6, for a sharing call to discuss the Pandemic-EBT application process with other sponsors. This is a follow up to the P-EBT webinar that was held today with Hunger Free Colorado, CDHS and the Colorado Department of Education.

Claiming guidance 

Sponsors must follow the counting and claiming procedures under the National School Lunch Program and School Breakfast Program. Eligible meals for reimbursement must meet the NSLP and SBP meal pattern and be a reimbursable meal. Additionally, meals must be tracked by student and their associated free, reduced-price or paid eligibility status. All meals will be submitted for reimbursement within the Colorado Nutrition Portal

Program Updates

Transition to National School Lunch Program

As a reminder, sponsors cannot continue using the Summer Food Service Program to serve meals once schools reopen for the 2020-21 school year, even if schools remain fully remote. Once schools begin instruction time for the 2020-21 school year, the SFSP will end, and schools will operate the National School Lunch and School Breakfast programs. Visit the School Nutrition Back-to-School planning webpage for additional guidance.

Apply for the 2020-21 school year Fresh Fruit and Vegetable Program grant 

The FFVP application for the 2020-21 school year is open and will close on Friday, Aug. 7. To apply, schools must submit a completed FFVP application in the Colorado Nutrition Portal. Download the application instructions for more information and apply before the application deadline.

Register for the free and reduced-price meals virtual training

Join two virtual training sessions specific to school meal eligibility that will model the typical in-person training normally held during the summer. These training sessions are not applicable for Residential Child Care Institutions with all residential students, non-public sponsors operating Provision 2 in a non-base year, or public sponsors operating Community Eligibility Provision or Provision 2 in a non-base year. 

  • Free and Reduced 101: this training session will be 1 - 4 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 5, and is designed for new staff with minimal experience, or anyone seeking the basics of the free and reduced-price school meal program. Learn more about this training and register
  • Free and Reduced 201: this training session will be 1 - 4 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 12, and is designed for experienced staff wanting to critically think through the intricate areas of the free and reduced-price school meal program. Learn more about this training and register.

Participants will receive professional standards training credit for attending this training. If you do not receive a confirmation email after registering, please work with your IT department to add to your safe sender's list.

The School Nutrition Unit hosted a back-to-school webinar on July 23 about identifying how to implement USDA waivers and program regulations for the 2020-21 school year operations. Sponsors can access the webinar recording on the School Nutrition Back-to-School webpage and can receive professional standards training credit.
