Take the Next Generation Science Standards survey

CDE has launched a survey to gather public feedback on a proposal from the science standards review committee to adapt the Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS) for Colorado. The survey will be open through Monday, March 19. Access it via Survey Monkey.

The science standards review committee is recommending that Colorado adapt the NGSS as Colorado’s science standards. Proposed adaptation of NGSS would take substantial parts of the NGSS and incorporate them into the Colorado Academic Standards for science.

The science standards review and revision committee will present its final recommendations to the State Board at their April and May meetings.

Anticipated calendar for State Board review of proposed revisions

The State Board of Education will hear final recommendations from the standards review and revision committees through its June meeting.

The committees for computer science, the arts and world languages will present their final revision recommendations at the March board meeting with an expected vote to occur at the April meeting.

The schedule for final presentation and approval of revisions will be as follows:

March: Final recommendations for arts, computer science and world languages.

April: Final recommendations for mathematics, social studies and science. Action to approve arts, computer science and world languages.

May: Final recommendations for science; reading, writing, and communicating; comprehensive health and physical education. Action to approve mathematics and social studies.

June: Action to approve science; reading, writing, and communicating; comprehensive health and physical education.

All proposed revision are anticipated to be adopted by July 1 in alignment with state law. Districts will have two years to review and revise local standards as needed with implementation scheduled for the 2020-21 school year.
The review and revision process is required by Senate Bill 08-212, known as Colorado’s Achievement Plan for Kids (CAP4K). The law requires a review and revision of the Colorado Academic Standards on or before July 1, 2018, and every six years thereafter.
