Standards for social studies and mathematics approved

At its May meeting, the State Board of Education approved final revisions to the mathematics standards as well as the social studies standards with amendments. The board withdrew a proposed amendment that would have added a U.S. citizenship test to the high school standards.

Districts will have two years to review and revise their local standards as needed with implementation scheduled for the 2020-21 school year.

All final revisions, including amendments, are posted on the standards review and revision homepage.

 Anticipated June standards review

At the June State Board meeting, the Board will vote on final recommendations from science; the reading, writing, and communicating; and comprehensive health and physical education committees.

Prior to voting on approval of these standards, the Board will vote on proposed amendments to the reading, writing, and communicating as well as the comprehensive health and physical education standards.  To view these amendments, visit the standards review and revision homepage.

Comments on the proposed amendment can be submitted to standardsreview2018@cde.state.co.us or to state.board@cde.state.co.us.

Schedule for State Board review and approval of proposed revisions

The State Board of Education has been hearing final recommendations from the standards review and revision committees throughout the spring.

So far, the Board has approved the final revisions to the visual and performing arts, mathematics, social studies and world languages standards and approved the new voluntary secondary computer science standards.

Final drafts of all proposed revisions are now available on the standards review and revision webpage.

Districts will have two years to review and revise their local standards as needed with implementation scheduled for the 2020-21 school year.

CDE cautions districts from revising local standards and curriculum until final approval of revisions by the State Board of Education.  As the Board approves revisions, districts may begin their process to review and revise their local standards and curriculum.  The department anticipates that final, copy-edited versions of approved standards as well as an online standards system will be available by early August.

The Board will vote on all proposed revisions by July 1, 2018, in alignment with state law.
The review and revision process is required by Senate Bill 08-212, known as Colorado’s Achievement Plan for Kids (CAP4K). The law requires a review and revision of the Colorado Academic Standards on or before July 1, 2018, and every six years thereafter.
