Proposed amendment to social studies standards

At the May State Board meeting, the board is anticipated to vote on final recommendations from the social studies and mathematics committees.

The board will review a proposed amendment to the social studies standards that would add the citizenship test to the high school standards. To view the amendment, visit the standards review and revision homepage under the April 11 meeting update.

Comments on the proposed amendment can be submitted to standardsreview2018@cde.state.co.us or to state.board@cde.state.co.us.

At next month's meeting, the board will also hear final  recommendations from the science; reading, writing and communicating; and comprehensive health and physical education committees.

This will be the second month the board hears about the science standards committee's recommendation to adapt the Next Generation Science Standards to the Colorado Academic Standards.

Anticipated calendar for State Board review of proposed revisions

The State Board of Education will hear final recommendations from the standards review and revision committees through its June meeting.

The schedule for final presentation and approval of revisions will be as follows:

May
Final recommendations for science; reading, writing, and communicating; comprehensive health and physical education. Action to approve mathematics and social studies.

June
Action to approve science; reading, writing, and communicating; comprehensive health and physical education.

Final drafts of all proposed revisions are now available on the standards review and revision webpage.

CDE cautions districts from revising local standards and curriculum until final approval of revisions by the State Board of Education.  As the Board approves revisions, districts may begin their process to review and revise their local standards and curriculum.  The department anticipates that final, copy-edited versions of approved standards as well as an online standards system will be available by early August.

All proposed revisions are anticipated to be adopted by July 1, 2018 in alignment with state law.  Districts will have two years to review and revise their local standards as needed with implementation scheduled for the 2020-21 school year.

The review and revision process is required by Senate Bill 08-212, known as Colorado’s Achievement Plan for Kids (CAP4K). The law requires a review and revision of the Colorado Academic Standards on or before July 1, 2018, and every six years thereafter.
