School Nutrition Program applications will open in the Colorado Nutrition Portal soon. CDE School Nutrition is working closely with our technology vendor to ensure system functionality allows for a smooth application process. Application resources and training will be available on the How to Apply webpage and announced in the Dish shortly. Keep in mind:
Sponsors participating in the Seamless Summer Option must first apply in school year 2020-21. Once the 2020-21 application is approved, sponsors will re-apply in school year 2021-22. This ensures important application data will roll over and less data input is required in the 2021-22 application.
Sponsors participating in SSO can provide free meals to all students at any school site and will be reimbursed at the higher Summer Food Service Program rate.
Sponsors participating in the National School Lunch Program, School Breakfast Program, or sites offering the Afterschool Snack Program will apply in school year 2021-22.
The U.S. Department of Agriculture provided updated guidance on the collection of free and reduced-price applications for the 2021-22 school year. Sponsors operating the Seamless Summer Option may collect and process free and reduced-price meal applications to establish eligibility for Pandemic-EBT only. Sponsors operating the National School Lunch Program may continue to collect and process free and reduced-price meal applications as part of normal operations.
Sponsors must provide new students, such as kindergarteners, and newly eligible children an opportunity to establish their eligibility, specifically for P-EBT. Paper copies of the free and reduced-price application must be made available at the district office. All disclosure requirements for release of student eligibility for non-P-EBT or non-program needs will apply.
Click here to register for this two-part training series in which participants will attend both sessions and learn valuable knife skills. This training is hosted by CDE and Nourish Colorado. Session One is scheduled for Monday, July 14, and session two for Monday, July 21, both from 2 to 3 p.m. Each training includes a recipe demonstration using vegetables participants will learn to cut. Participants will receive a gift card to purchase ingredients along with a grocery and equipment list. This is an excellent opportunity for cooks to gain hands-on practice while receiving two hours of professional development credits.
This month's On the Menu call is canceled. We hope you use this time for a much deserved summer break. We look forward to reconnecting at July’s On the Menu call on Thursday, July 22, from 2 to 3 p.m. Stay tuned for a registration link via Zoom.
The Consolidated Appropriations Act, 2021, provided the U.S. Department of Agriculture $30 million to distribute among state agencies to competitively award Equipment Assistance Grants to eligible School Food Authorities. Colorado received approximately $300,000 for this grant, which will be opened in the coming months. Visit the Grants and Awards webpage to view available funding opportunities.
CDE’s School Nutrition welcomes Christian Francisco as the part-time P-EBT support. Christian went back to school to earn his degree in human nutrition and dietetics and recently completed his final internship rotation with CDE. Christian jumped at the opportunity to stay longer and will be working with the unit through October to provide support with P-EBT.
