Important Announcement

New emergency notification system

School and district leaders are encouraged to register for a new emergency notification system launched by the Colorado Information Analysis Center (CIAC) within the Department of Public Safety. The digital platform includes a website and emergency messaging system and is designed to unify, standardize and distribute multi-jurisdictional emergency information. The system is a partnership between the Colorado Department of Public Safety, Colorado division of Homeland Security & Emergency Management, CIAC and the Colorado School Safety Resource Center.

All schools in Colorado from the largest university to the smallest early childcare center, may in some cases face the same emergency or threat. During these types of incidents, the state may be able to provide situational awareness to schools across a broad swath of Colorado, supporting the messaging of local and county law enforcement agencies. In all cases the CIAC may provide this messaging in an attempt to reach all stakeholders who have registered under the “School Personnel Registration” on the CIAC site, not necessarily to direct response actions or supplant directions of local emergency responders. Schools may be advised of an event as a state group or as smaller regional groups based on proximity to the given event and their registration choices.

For more information on how to sign up for the CIAC website and emergency alerts please visit here.

** Four day school week applications due May 11

School districts with a  four-day school week (less than 160 scheduled days per school year) are required to submit a request for approval.

To be considered for the 2020-21 school year, please complete the application via the Directory in Data Pipeline by Monday, May 11. Districts requesting approval are not obligated to follow their proposed calendar if their local planning is not finalized.

In addition to submitting the four-day application through Data Pipeline, districts Accredited with Priority Improvement Plan or Accredited with Turnaround Plan that are submitting a district-wide application for all schools within the district to be on a four-day school week must submit the following additional information separately to Jhon Penn at a copy of their respective school calendars, building class schedules, assembly schedules, bell schedule including lunchtime interval and professional development calendar.

CDE will review the additional materials for the use and prioritization of instructional time. The executive director of field services and the associate commissioner of school quality and support must recommend approval of the application before it is forwarded to the commissioner for consideration.

** School Code Change Request is now open

Districts requesting a new school code, school name change, school grade change and/or request for closing a school are required to submit an application, including the superintendent/executive director's signature, on or before June 30, for the 2020-21 school year.

The School Code Change Request Forms can be found on the website.
The deadline to submit your change request is Tuesday, June 30.

There are many benefits to submitting on or before June 30.

• Your on-time change requests will be incorporated into the school and district performance frameworks; thus the school characteristics for districts will not need to rely on the previous year’s characteristics.
• For those using the Colorado Performance Management System (RANDA), submitting school code change requests early ensures the school code will be available for use in the performance management system. This is beneficial as it provides the opportunity to make adjustments in the system prior to the start of the evaluation cycle.
• You will ensure that induction programs are attached to the appropriate school code.
• Time to complete the online certification application, a late request would miss the deadline for the online certification application.

When requests are submitted after the June 30 deadline, CDE cannot guarantee the request will be approved.
