How do I find the connections or “via” cities in a rail itinerary? Use the European Rail Planner Tool!

When searching for fares and schedules on https://agent.raileurope.com, you may get a response that the journey must be broken up into multiple single journeys with a suggested connecting city. When a connecting city isn’t offered, you may check schedules by using the European Rail Planner Tool. Let’s take Paris to Warsaw for example. By using the European Rail Planner Tool, you are able to choose the best route for your clients and apply that to Rail Europe’s agent site. All you need are the city pair(s), date(s), and time(s). In this case I see that the best itinerary is out of Paris Gare de Lyon via Zurich and Vienna to Warsaw’s central station. Save this link to your “Favorites” today!

Why Oktoberfest in September?
Oktoberfest is held annually in Munich, Bavaria, Germany for 17 or 18 days, starting on the third Saturday of September and ending on first Sunday of October (to coincide with German Unity Day). This cherished national festival is steeped in history and tradition.

It all started over 200 years ago when Prince Ludwig I married Princess Therese of Saxony-Hildburghausen on October 12, 1810. Open to the public, the citizens were able to celebrate this union in front of the city gates along with a closing ceremony horse race. The following year an agricultural show was added, and through the 1800s the event rapidly evolved into a full-out fair including beer halls, amusement park rides and games, and varieties of regional cuisine. Eventually, Oktoberfest was pushed back into September to allow for warmer late-summer nights in the beer tents.

2016 will mark the 183rd Oktoberfest, and starts on September 17th. On average, almost 8 million liters of beer are consumed. One of which is Augustiner, founded in 1328 and is the oldest Munich brewery. Here are some other fun facts:
  • 70% of visitors come from Bavaria, 15% from the rest of Germany and 15% from European countries, the US, Australia and Canada.
  • Attracts between 5 and 7 million visitors each year.
  • The festival grounds cover 310,000 square meters.
  • Oktoberfest beers have a slightly higher alcohol level at 6% to 7%.
  • Entry to Oktoberfest is FREE!
  • The largest tent is the Hofbräu-Festzelt with over 6,000 seats inside, 3,000 outside, and 1,000 standing tables.
Just in time for Oktoberfest is the specially priced 7-day consecutive German Rail Pass with rates starting as low as $267 per person in 2nd-class. Discounts are given to two people traveling together and for those between the ages of 12 and 25. Two children (ages 6-11) travel for free per adult. And kids under 6 always travel for free! These low prices are only available for purchase through September 29, 2016 and for travel through October 31, 2016.

Encourage your clients to base their vacation in Munich for the festivities, and use the pass to visit top tourist destinations throughout Germany…and beyond. The German Rail Pass even includes travel to select cities in the neighboring countries of Austria, Switzerland, Poland, and more.
