Mar 2019 - Hope of the City Newsletter

Hooray – We’re Going to the Dentist(s)!

When’s the last time you got excited about a visit to the dentist? Well, for 50 students from Sham Shui Po, Mar 23 brought an eagerly-awaited trip to the Faculty of Dentistry at HKU, to learn all about careers in this field. Sponsored by the Lions Club, students from China Holiness College and Ming Yin College spent the morning touring the facilities and finding out what’s involved in becoming a dentist, dental hygienist, dental assistant and more. Accompanied by 15 Lions Club volunteers, the outing wound up with a buffet lunch and time to share insights from the day’s experience. Huge thanks go out to the Lions Club and the enthusiastic staff of HKU for making this a meaningful and memorable day!

2019 Home Visits Kick Off

Hope of the City’s sixth year of family home visits kicked off on Feb 27 in Sham Shui Po. In partnership with J-Life, 16 Hope volunteers will be visiting 10 low-income families each month throughout the year, to build friendships and offer encouragement. Among our volunteers, three – Angel, Tony and Simon – have been with the program for five years! Over time, we have witnessed many positive transitions for these families. A few have moved out of their subdivided homes into public housing, while several mothers have begun to open up more and share their personal challenges, demonstrating the strengthening relationships.

Learning and Doing

On Mar 12, Hope of the City was invited to visit the Service Club at Hong Kong International School to share about poverty issues in Hong Kong and how students can get involved. The 20 club participants were led through several awareness activities, such as using string to map out an area of 150 sq. ft., the size of many subdivided flats in Sham Shui Po. Then, to put their new knowledge into action, 19 students and parents signed up for Hope’s Mobile Shopping Fair in April to deliver food and daily necessities to low-income elderly. Way to go, kids!

Birthday Fun

It’s always a delight to participate in an IDEAL Birthday Party, and our Mar 9 event was as much fun as ever. This time, seven Hope of the City volunteers joined 43 young adults from the Intellectually Disabled Education and Advocacy League (IDEAL) for an afternoon of raucous games and music in Sham Shui Po. In addition to leading the activities, our volunteers enthusiastically pitched in to help serve the yummy party food and cake, bringing joyful smiles to many faces. Why not sign up to help out at our next birthday party on May 4?

Beholding Beauty

Following days of gloomy rain, Mar 16 brought glorious sunshine – perfect weather for a visit to the Hong Kong Flower Show at Victoria Park.  Thanks to the Social Welfare Department, 20 seniors from 3 elderly homes in North Point were treated to a lovely morning of strolling through the exquisite flower displays and sharing personal gardening stories with the nine Hope volunteers who accompanied them. One volunteer shared that the highlight of the day for him was getting to interact with the elderly and witnessing their faces light up while posing for photos in such beautiful surroundings.
