Singing Hearts Bring Smiles to the Elderly
Beautiful music filled the air on Jan 7, when 130 elderly from our Ngau Tau Kok Elderly Home Visits program gathered for a very special concert and lunch in the company of 56 home visit volunteers. The concert, at the Diocesan Boys' School, featured the Shanghai Singing Hearts Children’s Choir, who flew in especially for the occasion. Other performers included talented musicians from DBS and Lingnam Alumni University Primary School. With happy tunes still ringing in their ears, the elderly sat down to a delicious poon choi lunch, followed by a lucky draw and tour of the beautiful campus. Our thanks go out to St James Settlement, the Y’s Men Club of Hong Kong and DBS for making this joyful event possible.

Home Cleaning for Ma Por Por
When Hope of the City became aware that a frail por por in our Elderly Home Visits program in Ngau Tau Kok desperately needed help to clean her home, our staff of three and two volunteers rolled up our sleeves and got to work. We spent the afternoon of Dec 22 scrubbing and scouring to get Ma Por Por’s place in tiptop shape before her son returned home from the hospital after having a heart transplant. Our labor was well rewarded when a grateful Ma Por Por declared that her public housing unit was cleaner than when she moved in!

SSP Xperience 2.0
On Jan 13-14, Hope of the City ran our third SSP Xperience 2.0 in Sham Shui Po. This time round, the participants were 16 students and 8 teachers/volunteers from Hong Kong International School. These adventurous students took the 2 day/1 night service tour in stride, with hearts ready to learn. They visited families living in subdivided homes, served hot drinks to street sleepers and helped out in a soup kitchen, witnessing first-hand the huge wealth gap that exists in our city. Under the guidance of their teachers, they’ll now form action plans for sustainable ways to make a difference.

IDEAL Birthday Party
Take 33 young adults from IDEAL, seven energetic Hope of the City volunteers, and an outdoor basketball court on a warm winter’s day and what do you get? The perfect way to spend New Year’s Eve! Once every quarter, Hope of the City helps IDEAL put on a birthday party for young people with intellectual disabilities, and this time it fell on Dec 31. What fun it was to play circle games, laugh together, take photos and share a few songs before devouring the tasty treats prepared by the mothers. A truly memorable send-off for 2016!
