Jan 2019 - Hope of the City Newsletter

Learning to Love our City

What does it mean to love our city? In 2019 you’ll have the chance to find out as Hope of the City is running a series of poverty awareness talks called Loving the City. The sessions will explore how we as individuals can play a role in caring for and transforming Hong Kong. The first of four planned talks, held on Jan 27 at Island, drew 84 participants. Our speaker was Stephen Wong, a public policy advisor with Our Hong Kong Foundation. Stephen shared his insights on Hong Kong’s poverty situation and his personal journey from a high-flying career in finance to his current passion to help make our city a better place. For details of upcoming talks, please contact us at info@hopeofthecity.com.

Keen on Visitors

The Po Keen Elderly Home in North Point is a regular stop for Hope’s volunteers, who visit the home’s 12 mostly house-bound residents monthly. But December saw two groups pop in to bring some extra Christmas cheer: 17 volunteers on Dec 1 and another 15 on Dec 29. With plenty of young children among them to put smiles on wrinkled faces, they chatted together, did some movement exercises, sang carols and shared yummy treats for afternoon tea. There were even holiday gifts for each por por and gong gong – cozy knitted hats, scarves and socks。

Love is in the Air

Hope of the City has been partnering with Jubilee Ministries to provide mentoring to four young women living in a transitional home called Love House in Sham Shui Po. Every month, two Hope volunteers and one Hope staff member meet with the women for fellowship. They also team up for seasonal outreach to their neighbours living in sub-divided flats. On Dec 19, they went caroling by candlelight through the narrow, dimly-lit corridors of their building. Then on Jan 30, they went door to door sharing the love of Jesus and distributing Chinese New Year goodie bags, deeply moving several neighbourhood women.

Jingle Bells Plus…

One of our all-time favourite events each year is our Christmas lunch for the elderly who participate in our home visits programs. This time, the celebration was at the Paramount in Kowloon Bay on Dec 15. Our talented home visit volunteers put on a variety show for the 89 seniors and family members and the 86 Hope volunteers who accompanied them to the event. There was a handbell performance, personal sharing, a message on the meaning of Christmas and a touching video montage of many precious moments with the elderly over the past six years, bringing both smiles and happy tears.

Doubling the Impact

What better way to start a new year than with not one but two SSP Xperiences in January. This pair of two-day service tours of Sham Shui Po – the first on Jan 18-19 with 15 YWAMers, the second on Jan 25-26 with 13 students and two teachers from HKIS – took participants into subdivided homes to deliver CNY blessing bags and/or groceries, and to a local park to serve tea to street sleepers. They had the chance to hear inspiring testimonies from people who have risen above personal life challenges. The students even entertained a group of elderly over a CNY poon choi lunch.
