March 2014 - Hope of the City Newsletter
Hope of the City recognises that inequality in wealth is creating a significant gap in academic achievement between individuals from affluent backgrounds and those from disadvantaged homes. In striving to support children from low-income families, Hope of the City is providing one hour of English tuition each week to over 95 students in the Sham Shui Po area. Each class has no more than 10 students to allow for personalised feedback. Our teachers are hired through professional language centres and are dedicated to answering questions that school teachers may not be able to address in large classes.

Life Education for Children
We believe children need to be equipped with decision-making skills and character values to thrive in all aspects of their lives. This year, we are sponsoring a FruitArt workshop where children will learn about healthy eating habits and create fun artwork out of fruit. There will also be a 6-week Public Speaking workshop which aims to enhance the children's public presentation skills while building up their confidence.

Special Education Needs
During 2014, Hope of the City is embarking on a new mission to support low-income families who have children with learning disabilities. In our weekly English courses and home visits, we have discovered multiple children who demonstrate signs of learning disabilities but have never been adequately assessed. Therefore, we are partnering with the Child Development Centre to offer free workshops about early child development. Hope of the City is also working with our donors to sponsor children who need complete medical assessments, counselling and treatments.
