A Day at the Movies
On May 24, the 10th floor worship hall of Island ECC was transformed into a movie theatre for a day, complete with popcorn, steaming sui mai served on skewers, and a big-screen showing of an award-winning Cantonese film. For a few hours, 90 seniors from Shek Kip Mei and Ngau Tau Kok, along with 88 home visit volunteers, were transported back to 1960s Hong Kong, sharing laughter and tears as they immersed themselves in the touching story of a hard-working local family. Over dim sum following the show, many of the seniors reflected on how the movie had really brought back memories. With the volunteers’ care for the elderly on full display, it was a delightful, nostalgic day for all.

Walking for a Good Cause
May 12 was the date for IDEAL’s annual Mother’s Day Walkathon at the Peak, in support of people with intellectual disabilities and their families. This year, seven Hope volunteers pitched in to help put up and take down the distance markers before and after the event. One volunteer even brought along a loveable dog to liven up the atmosphere. The 60 participants had a good walk in splendid weather following an early morning rain. It’s always a pleasure to partner with IDEAL for this meaningful and fun event.

Mother's Day Family Outing
If you think Mother’s Day is a time for moms to stay home and relax, think again! For 138 mothers and their families from J Life, it was an opportunity to explore the New Territories by coach. The Hope-sponsored whirlwind tour on May 13 included stops at the Old Wives’ Cake Factory in Yuen Long (free samples included), a seafood lunch at Lau Fau Shan (delicious!), an afternoon of educational engagement at the Pineapple Farm, and a visit to the fascinating Railway Museum in Tai Po. Hot? Exhausting? Loads of fun? Yes, yes and YES!

Sweet Treats for Mom
In celebration of Mother's Day, the students from Yan Kei Church’s English Tutoring class got a special day of sticky fun on Saturday, May 12. Twenty-seven students and family members joined 10 Hope of the City tutors and one very patient cook for an English-language lesson in chocolate mochi making. The finished packs of mochi were gift wrapped and decorated with a handmade paper carnation and a personal note, as a sweet treat for Mom. Just as sweet was the opportunity for bonding between these youngsters and their families and tutors.

Tutors with Heart
Michelle and Kevin became volunteer tutors to siblings Frankie and Sarah in May 2016. Besides tutoring the kids in English and other subjects, they also played games, watched movies or sometimes just hung out with them. At first, Frankie had no motivation to study, while Sarah couldn’t sit still. Through the initial frustrations, Michelle and Kevin remained commited to sharing God's love with this family. Two years on, the relationship has blossomed and they feel blessed to witness Frankie’s growth in maturity and diligence, and Sarah excelling in sports!
