Christmas Celebration for the Elderly
Christmas may seem long gone, but many happy memories linger for the 84 seniors and 76 volunteers who joined Hope of the City’s Christmas Outreach Lunch on Dec 16. Our invited guests were all from our elderly home visits programs in Shek Kip Mei and Ngau Tau Kok. This festive gathering featured a children’s choir, a touching performance by Kimman Wong and sharing by Minister Chan about the true meaning of Christmas. Following a delicious buffet lunch, each elderly guest received a gift from Santa and a bag of goodies to take home. Our heart-felt thanks go out to St. James Settlement for their partnership in organizing this event and to the Mandarin Bible Church for hosting us so graciously.

More Memories of Christmas
Throughout December, Hope of the City was delighted to share a bit of Christmas joy with some 160 children and families from J-Life, Po Leung Kuk and the Hub Hong Kong. From a Winter Carnival at Bank of America Merrill Lynch, to a Sports Fun Day at King’s Park, to a Christmas party at Christian Concern for the Homeless, some 160 kids and parents played games, created crafts and enjoyed some very yummy food together. Thank you to BoAML, St David’s Society and the 73 volunteers who helped make Christmas so special for these kids.

Career Days Inspire
It’s been our privilege over the past few years to partner with Bank of America Merrill Lynch in holding regular Career Days for secondary students from Sham Shui Po. On Dec 1 and Jan 15, we brought 18 students from Wai Kui College and 15 students from United Christian College respectively to the bank, to learn about effective communication from the BoAML Legal Team. Knowing that the UCC students were studying Information Communication Technology, BoAML arranged for a colleague from their Shanghai office to join in via live video conferencing, which was an awe-inspiring experience for the students.

Weaving Lives Together
For the past six months, members of the Woven family care group from Island ECC have been making monthly visits to the Po Keen Elderly Home in North Point. On each visit, they always make sure to bring one or more of their children along to bring some extra love to the elderly residents as they sing simple worship songs, do hand exercises, play a game and have tea together. We are truly inspired by this group’s faithfulness. If your care group would like to join us in visiting lonely elderly, please get in touch.

Time to Clean House
On Jan 27, sixteen Hope of the City volunteers teamed up with the Hong Kong Family Welfare Society - North Point for a Seniors House Cleaning Day. They rolled up their sleeves and pitched in to scrub and tidy the homes of 5 elderly people in preparation for Chinese New Year. Initially, many of the elderly were sceptical about having strangers clean their homes, but the whole-hearted efforts of the volunteers soon won them over. One couple was thrilled to see a shining portrait of their youthful selves emerge from beneath years of mould and dust as the frame and glass were scrubbed clean.
