Things are busy throughout our Midwest Region. Chapters' school years have come to a close and Graduation ceremonies have commenced.
Cincinnati took the honors for having our Region's largest graduating class with 33 graduates.
Here's some graduating counts from around the region:
IEC of the Bluegrass - 16
Central Indiana IEC - 12
IEC of Greater St. Louis - 10
IEC Central Ohio - 22
IEC Kentucky & Southern Indiana - 16
Best wishes to all Chapter's Wire Off winners. I know many of us are betting that the 2014 IEC National Apprentice of the Year winner will once again come from our MIdwest Region!
On a side note, SkillsUSA National Competition recently took place in Kansas City, MO. IEC National hosted the electrical competition. George Thess, IEC Midwest Region member, lead our IEC National team. SkillsUSA's host city changes to Louisville, KY, in 2015 but stays in our Midwest Region!
Central Missouri IEC (C.M.I.E.C.)
In March 2000, four Sedalia, Missouri, area electrical contractors met to discuss harassment each had received from the same federally supported union agency out of Kansas City, Missouri. Dave Rouchka, Medallion Electric Company, directed the efforts and was joined by Wayne Goosen, Goosen Electric; Ben Embree, Embree Electric; and Mike Mills, Marshall Electric Contracting.
With the help of their electrical supply house, Phillips & Company of Sedalia, the contractors began conducting regular meetings at the local Central Missouri Electric Corp’s community conference room to research the feasibility and requirements for forming a local IEC Chapter. The Steering committee contacted Sheila Sperla and George Thess with IEC of Greater St. Louis for guidance. “Both were very helpful in walking us through new chapter requirements. George’s hand-on assistance with local BAT officials and establishing our apprentice committee and standards was invaluable,” said Dave Rouchka.
A letter of intent to form a new IEC Chapter was compiled and sent to Bill Bledsoe, IEC National President, on April 20, 2000, indicating geographical boundaries and petitioning to be recognized as Central Missouri IEC. By-laws, officers, apprenticeship committee, and standards were all compiled and sent to IEC National on September 14, 2000. Ben Embree attended the 2000 National Convention to witness the petition and receive the Chapter’s Charter.
Our apprenticeship program has always been the core priority of our chapter. Numerous men and women have benefited from the education & training presented by our program. Area contractors benefit by employing top quality apprentice and journeyman electricians developed through our program.
C.M.I.E.C. has grown from our original four members to a consistent seven contractor members employing approximately 45 journeyman and apprentice electricians.
In 2010 the C.M.I.E.C. Executive committee voted to purchase an available two-story structure in the heart of downtown Sedalia just ½ block from the City Municipal Building. C.M.I.E.C. is currently in the process of remodeling the building with the intent of utilizing the facility as an apprenticeship training center with lab and office space.
Community involvement is important to C.M.I.E.C. We have wired HABIT houses with donated supplies and used them as a means for training our apprentice. Opportunity again presented itself to the C.M.I.E.C. with the recognition of a Registered National Monument located on the Missouri State Fairgrounds. This registered and historically recognized monument is known as “TRAILS END.”
