Save the date - Washington State Nonprofit Conference is May 17th!

Dear Members and Friends,

I continue to feel honored to work to strengthen the nonprofit sector on a daily basis. Yesterday, I was down in Olympia to testify on SB 5190, a bill that will update a rule that unnecessarily excludes some nonprofits from running fundraising raffles.  While this is a very focused effort, it signals our commitment to advocacy on issues our members care about. This issue came to our attention through discussion on a webinar in which it became clear that the rules surrounding liquor and gambling at nonprofit events are poorly understood but also in some cases may merit modification. By working collaboratively with state government, we can change policies affecting nonprofits for the better. I am optimistic that SB 5190 will pass, and I look forward to working with all of you to identify more cross-cutting opportunities to collaboration on advocacy efforts.

I’m truly excited about the Washington State Nonprofit Conference coming up on May 17. We have some excellent experts going far beyond the basics—presenting on how to lead in collaborative networks, how to adjust to trends like performance-based contracting and minimum wage increases, how to make meaningful change toward greater equity in our organizations and our communities.  Seasoned executives and new nonprofit staff can both benefit.  Please read on for additional highlights of the 2017 conference.

Thank you for your interest in our work. I hope our paths will cross soon or that you will contact me if you have thoughts about how we can increase our effectiveness.

In Solidarity,

Laura Pierce
Interim Executive Director

Better Through Partnerships

We want to highlight the ways in which our conference will be better this year thanks to our fabulous partners. We have two curated conferences tracks and three great pre-conferences that are made possible because our partners have stepped up to present and curate quality sessions.

Come the day before and take your choice of three extra learning opportunities:
  • NPIP, experts on insurance, will present an all-day workshop on Risk Management.
  • CliftonLarsonAllen will present the latest information on nonprofit accounting in a CFO Update.
  • Center for Ethical Leadership will share their wisdom via a half-day workshop on Inclusive Leadership through Gracious Space.
At the main conference, check out two curated advanced tracks:
  • UW Evans School of Public Policy and Governance presents Leading in Turbulent Times, a series of master classes on key policy and practice issues for nonprofit leaders.
  • Housing Development Consortium and Converge have gathered top experts on Network Leadership for a series of workshops that explores how to shift our own thinking, our organizations and our communities to support powerful collaboration.
Finally, we have a Nonprofit Q&A Center hosted by 501 Commons where you can get free, real-time consulting with experts on governance, financial management and legal issues.

This list highlights just a few of our partners who are shaping this year’s conference. We are especially grateful to statewide leaders and leaders of color who have offered wise input to create a powerful agenda. We hope you’ll join us on May 17!

Introducing Strategic Planning in Nonprofits!

by Nancy Bacon, Director of Learning

You asked for it—we answered. In January 2017, Washington Nonprofits completed its 4th toolkit in its learning series. Strategic Planning in Nonprofits (SPiN) takes you through the strategic planning cycle (yes, the SPiN cycle!) to help your organization develop an actionable plan. Funded by the Sattterberg Foundation and featuring veteran strategic planner Laura Pierce, SPiN is now available on our Washington Nonprofit Institute website. Like all of our toolkits, it is free!

We especially appreciate the sharing of planning stories by Anne Marie Schwerin (YWCA, Walla Walla), Srijan Chakraborty (Hunger Intervention Program, Seattle), Laura Abernathy (Tree of Life Sanctuary, Bellingham), and Edie Rice-Sauer (Transitions, Spokane). Watch the videos to hear their tips for building strong plans.

SPiN joins Finance Unlocked for Nonprofits (FUN), Boards in Gear (BIG), and Let’s Go Legal. These tools were designed for busy board members who want to learn on their own, at meetings, and in workshops.

Building Partnerships that Benefit Food Banks and the Communities They Serve

by Nancy Bacon, Director of Learning

Food banks work at the heart of our communities making sure that everyone has access to nutritious food. As they do this, another set of partners is looking after their access to the kind of training that will sustain their work. In Fall 2016, Washington Nonprofits teamed up with Northwest Harvest, our region’s leading hunger relief agency to deliver board and grantwriting courses in Skagit, Clark, and Yakima Counties. Katie Howard, veteran grantwriter and trainer, joined the team to deliver her highly acclaimed “Accidental Grantwriter” workshop.

Thank You Rick, Welcome Tom!

Rick Anderson, our Public Policy Director since 2014, left Washington Nonprofits earlier this month for a position at Communities in Schools Washington. Under Rick’s watch, Washington Nonprofits expanded public policy initiatives to include year-round engagement with policymakers, the annual legislative reception, a cross-sector summit, quarterly policy action calls, and a set of community visits featuring First Lady Trudi Inslee.  We are grateful for his service!

Tom Lang joined us in February to take on the position of Learning Program Manager. A member of the learning team, Tom will work closely with our community partners to deliver around 150 learning programs each year.  He comes to us from member organization Foundation for International Understanding Through Students (FIUTS).  Welcome Tom!

Legislative Reception

Thank you all who attended our 4th Annual Legislative Reception. We had a huge turnout from our members, invited guests, and legislators at the Governor’s Mansion. Laura Pierce, Maya Thornell-Sandifor, and Speaker Frank Chopp each gave brief remarks on the power of partnerships in these uncertain times. It was great to see such energy in the room!
