Hello Print Enthusiast,
We just returned from Washington, DC.  It was our first time hosting a BIG INK event in our nation's capitol.  Corcoran School of the Arts & Design invited BIG INK to print woodblocks carved by students, faculty, and alumni.  We set up shop in the light filled atrium of Corcoran's Flagg Building that is located across the street from the White House.

After a productive day at Corcoran we explored the monuments, soaked in 70° degree temperature and caught a glimpse of the blossoming cherry trees.  DC is a hectic place, but the architecture sure is striking. Every downtown building looks like a monument!  After DC, we headed to Maryland Hall for the Creative Arts in Annapolis, MD.  Over 1,000 spectators visited throughout the weekend.  Watch the videos below to get a sense of the scale of the amazing woodblocks printed at this event.

Now the tour continues in New Hampshire and Colorado this June.  Read about the artists in these events and more news from the world of woodblock printing!

Thank you for your support,

BIG INK at Maryland Hall for the Creative Arts

Our event at Maryland Hall for the Creative Arts in Annapolis, MD was a huge hit!  Over a thousand people attended the art center's annual open house.  Visitors helped celebrate the printing of thirteen new large-scale woodblocks.

Printing an intricately carved block by artist Hannah Cohen was one highlight of the event.  Cohen is primarily a paper cut artist, and this is the first woodblock she has created!  Jan Heath is a veteran of the medium.  The variety of patterns in her chicken inspired piece were a real treat to see printed.

Five of our Maryland Hall participants were BIG INK veterans.  This includes Sarah Matthews, Christy Ball, Catherine Cole, Louise Wallendorf and Zachariah Schmitt,.  It is an honor to develop a body of work with these individuals and see their imagery evolve.  Their dedication sustains the print community and is what makes BIG INK possible!  Much appreciation goes out to the participants, and special thanks to Maryland Hall exhibitions coordinator Emily Kohlenstein for inviting us.

Check out this video of BIG INK's giant mobile press "The Big Tuna" visiting the Corcoran School of the Arts and Design. The blocks were used theme of protest and many students sourced the university archives for inspiration. We had a fantastic time in the exhibition space that featured the multimedia art of Robin Bell. Special thanks to professor Kerry McAleer-Keeler for inviting us!
