Despite  the many restrictions, due to the Coronovirus Epidemic that is upon us, we were able to go ahead with the 17th annual 100 Holes for Haiti at the Beverly Golf and Country Club in collaboration with the Joy and Hope of Haiti organization. With 40 golfers we were under the cap of 50 and the decision to have the meals outside on the patio meant than an extra 16 people were able to join the golfers for the dinner served at the end of the tournament.  Breakfast and lunch were served to the golfers in take out packages.  It was a lovely September fall golf day and everyone was happy to have the opportunity to be out with others enjoying the company and making new memories and also fund raise for these two worthwhile endeavors.  With some funds still to come in, we were pleased to learn that thus far $28,000.00 was raised for the Canadian Friends of HAS (CFHAS).  Thanks to all of our golfing enthusiasts and the ones who supported them!
Due to the epidemic, this year's Hamilton Road2Hope Marathon was changed to a virtual event. Instead of joining as a Community Partner the decision was made by CFHAS to host our own event and thus the TREK2HAS was born.  Fourty-seven people registered and committed to covering a personal pre-determined distance, throughout the month of October, in order to cover the 3,600 km that separates Hamilton from the Hôpital Albert Schweitzer in Deschapelles, Haiti.  To cover their selected distance the participants from Hamilton area, BC, Colorado, Montana, Pennsylvania, Florida, England and Holland either rode, walked, cycled, rowed or a combination thereof. Due to their dedication we easily covered the distance and made it.  Not only did everyone put one foot in front of the other but also donated and/or did some fund raising as well, for the cause.  The final numbers are not in yet but we are so excited to learn that we have surpassed our goal of $7,200.00 by more than $4,000.00.  WOW!  How fortunate the CFHAS is to have such generous and supportive people backing its efforts.THANK YOU EVERYONE !!!

With the hopes that the Coronorvirus situation would be more or less under control by next spring, the decision was made to change the date of the Haiti Happening from its usual last Saturday in February to the last Saturday in April …that is to say  April 24, 2021 at the GRAND OLYMPIA.  However we know the situation is ever evolving and we will be making decisions and/or altering plans as the situation dictates over the coming months.  We wish to make sure we not only have a successful fund raising event but also a safe and healthy one for all concerned.   Please make a tentative mark on your calendars for this event and we will keep you posted as time goes by.

The CFHAS was very fortunate to receive a grant from the Canadian Medical Foundation of $20,000.00 which was forwarded to HAS to use in its efforts to combat the Coronovirus.  The funds are being used  for community education about COVID - 19, provision of 139 Tippy Tap hand washing stations and 300 hand washing stations in 5 localities as well as preparation and distribution of surface disinfectant that is being produced at the hospital.  In addition to covering its own needs, HAS has supplied other health facilities in the area as well as the local police, churches and schools with more than 3,000 gallons of the   high quality cleaning solution.

COVID-19  at HAS

HAS was designated as an official treatment center for COVID-19 by the Haitian government.  The staff worked quickly to repair, paint and upgrade an outside building that had been used during the cholera outbreak after the earthquake.  Thus far 87 confirmed cases have been treated at the center and the Community Health Centers have screened 140 people suspected of the virus.

A key element to mitigate the spread of COVID – 19 has been education and raising awareness of the precautions to take which has been accomplished by the team of community health workers.  Dr Pierre the Community Health Medical Director commented that he had observed more people wearing masks and observing social distancing in the HAS service area compared to other parts of the country.  On one visit to the Tienne Health Center in the mountains he was encouraged to see every patient wearing a mask.
Do you have a passion for helping others?  Are you interested in volunteering with a great bunch of fun loving and dedicated people?  Then the Canadian Friends of HAS is the organization for you!  We would love to have you join one of our committees and/or sit on our Board of Directors.
Through various activities our main goal is to raise funds for the Maternal/Child Health Programs at Hôpital Albert Schweitzer in Deschapelles, Haiti.  Please visit our website:  Contact us with your interest at:  We look forward to exploring this golden opportunity together with you.

Thank you again for your interest in and support of the Canadian Friends of HAS.  As we live through and adapt to these rare times, we hope that you and yours are staying safe and healthy.  We  leave you with the following words of Albert Schweitzer.

“ The greatest discovery of any generation is that human beings can alter their lives by altering the attitudes of their minds.”

“ Eventually all things fall into place.  Until then laugh at the confusion, live for the moments, and know EVERYTHING HAPPENS FOR A REASON.”
