Are you a sports enthusiast looking for a great opportunity to put on your running or walking shoes?

Are you interested in impacting health care in the Developing world?

If so, please join the Canadian Friends of Hopital Albert Schweitzer (CFHAS) in a 5K or 10K walk or run on Saturday November 4 2018. Or if you are really dedicated run the ½ or full Marathon on Sunday Nov 5.

CFHAS is once again proud to be a community partner with the Hamilton Marathon Road2Hope Marathon which takes place in Hamilton’s Confederation Park the first weekend in November. As a community partner we are recruiting a team to walk, run and fundraise in support of CFHAS. All funds that we raise through sponsorships of team members will be used to deliver Women and Child Health care at Hopital Albert Schweitzer in Haiti.

100 Holes for Haiti - Golf Tournament -  September 13th 2018
The eager golfers started the day with breakfast and then posing for a group photo op. The pro gave us instructions and encouragement. What a beautiful day greeted everyone as they headed out to play as many holes as possible. The participants were encouraged to partake in the putting and chipping contests. Two golfers tied with 150 points in the putting contest, each winning $50. The chipping contest was new this year. Al Zorro showed us all up with two balls landed in the small pool.

Gentle breezes blowing across the patio made it a perfect setting for the BBQ
lunch which everyone enjoyed. Golfers continued their quest for 100 holes after
lunch. The day was capped with happy hour on the patio followed with a delicious dinner. Throughout the dinner, a continuous show of pictures of the children of Haiti from Hopital Albert Schweitzer and the Cap Haitian education program sponsored by The Joy and Hope of Haiti was presented along with photos of last year’s Hal Devins spoke on behalf of Canadian Friends of Hopital Albert Schweitzer and Cal Shultz spoke for The Joy and Hope of Haiti.  We are so proud of the people who have given their time and talents to care for these children.Mark your calendars for next year’s tournament which will be held on September 12 th , 2019. Plan to sign up as a golfer or help the golfer reach his/her fundraising goal for the welfare of the children of Haiti.

A big thank you to all of this year’s participants and the organizing committee for planning such a successful and enjoyable day.
We are pleased to introduce Kevin MacPherson of Rossland B.C. who first visited HAS in 2012. It was an inspiring trip for him as it is with any of us who have had the opportunity to visit the hospital. Since then he has visited several more times donating orthopedic equipment to support the trauma and orthopedic surgical program. He has also provided his services assisting the Operating Room staff in organizing and categorizing the orthopedic surgical trays.

His most recent trip was to Eastern Canada, Ancaster to be precise, where he delivered another supply of orthopedic equipment to Louise Martin the CEO of HAS, who had travelled to Canada to participate in the CFHAS/Joy of Hope gold fundraiser.

Thanks Kevin for your support all around….as they say in Haiti….nap bay w yon gwo kout chapo  (our hats are off to you!)

At the end of August a team of 3 Canadian Health Professionals gathered from across Canada (Montreal, Toronto and Abbotsford) by Rose Charities travelled to HAS to conduct a training on neonatal resuscitation for 31 staff members. An initial training was given to 3 senior nurses and 3 pediatricians who then assisted with the visiting instructors, throughout the week, with the training of the remaining staff members. The 6 Haitian professionals will continue to train additional staff members and will run practice scenarios every 1-2 month to help in maintaining their competency. We are grateful for the partnership of Rose Healthcare Education in providing this essential training to the HAS staff. The nurses and physicians are better equipped to save the lives of our tiniest patients. For personal reflections on the trainers visit to Hopital Albert Schweitzer please visit

Summer Gathering

Thanks to Arlene Sargeant for once again opening her home and lovely backyard for the annual Canadian Friends of HAS summer BBQ held in June.  Those in attendance enjoyed tasty delights, lively conversation and camaraderie with  many sharing their stories of visits to HAS. The hit of the evening was the giant marshmallows roasted over the glowing embers in the fire pit.
