Fall 2015 Newsletter - www.cfhas.ca - Facebook - Donate

Yes, we need to ask for money !

I don’t know anybody who enjoys receiving requests for money – they arrive in the mail, they come into our email inboxes, even via a telephone call. Equally, I am not totally thrilled to be doing the asking today … but because of the need, I do so without apology. I have to assume, because you are reading this newsletter, that you already know of the work of Canadian Friends, supporting the Maternal and Child Health programme of Hôpital Albert Schweitzer Haiti.

You already know the needs in Haiti, ranging from specialist paediatric care and surgery, to nutrition support and inoculations against disease. The costs range through salaries of medical professionals and support staff, to costs of pharmaceuticals, medical/surgical supplies, equipment, and nutrition supplements. Equally important but often overlooked are the peripheral but essential costs of utilities and maintenance of the hospital and its campus.

Each November for the past 4 years, CFHAS has provided $100,000 to the hospital for Maternal and Child Health Care. This year, we have again given $100,000CAD but regrettably, this year our weakened Canadian dollar only bought $80,000USD.

For November 2016, we’d like to be able once again to provide HAS with $100,000. But to achieve that in American dollars, we at CFHAS need to raise closer to $130,000CAD.

In order to move towards this goal, we offer the following suggestion for you –

  • Setting up an on-going deduction from credit card or bank account in favour of CFHAS. This can be set for regular intervals such as monthly, bi-monthly, weekly, quarterly, or whatever you choose. The ideal way to do this is to go to our website ( cfhas.ca ) and follow the appropriate donation links.

  • Naturally, any one-time donation would also be welcomed … to commemorate a life, to celebrate a milestone, or just because you want to!

On behalf of the children of the Artibonite region in Haiti, and their mothers –

Thank you … Mesi anpil

Mick Stewart,

President, CFHAS

CFHAS presents cheque to HAS

On November 7th, 2015 CFHAS's Bradley Berquist presented a USD $80,0000 cheque to  Dr. Herrio Sannon, the Medical Director at HAS, to assist HAS in providing maternal and child health care in 2016. On behalf of CFHAS we would like to thank all of our supporters for their generous donations.

A happy story of continuing financial support

Once again this fall, CFHAS is delighted to report receipt of a grant, in the sum of $8,000CAD, from The Charles Johnson Charitable Fund. This grant is to be applied to the Maternal and Child Health programme that we support at Hôpital Albert Schweitzer Haiti.

The Charles Johnson Charitable Fund, is a private family trust based in Ottawa, established through the legacy of a grandparent of one of our founding members at CFHAS, Peter Johnson. Application must be renewed each year with submissions through a Johnson family member in early summer and disbursement to successful applicants in October. We are grateful to the Johnson family, that they continue to recognize not only the work of the hospital but also our efforts to support that work. 2015 is now the seventh year in succession that The Charles Johnson Charitable Fund has supported, at varying levels, the work of Canadian Friends of Hôpital Albert Schweitzer Haiti.

Canadian Friends of HAS at ROAD2HOPE Marathon

Once again Canadian Friends of HAS had the pleasure of being a Charity Partner in the Hamilton Marathon Road2Hope.  The event was help on Oct 31st and Nov 1st, a beautiful, fun filled fall weekend  for more than 4,000 runners and walkers who participated in either the 1K, 5K , 10K, ½ marathon or full marathon.  More than 225 generous donors sponsored the 35 members of “Team HAS” and collectively a total of $11,040 was raised in support maternal and child health care at HAS.

Canadian Friends of HAS at The 100 Holes for Haiti

CFHAS would like to thank each and everyone of you for so generously donating to "The 100 Holes for Haiti" Golf Tournament that took place on Sept 17th, run jointly by CFHAS and Joy & Hope of Haiti.    It was a beautiful day and everyone had a fabulous time.    A total of $95,000 was raised.    This sum is split equally between Joy and Hope of Haiti, and Canadian Friends of HAS.

The proceeds that come to CFHAS, will support the Maternal and Child Care program through our annual grant to Hopital Albert Schweitzer. All this could have not been accomplished without your support and we appreciate all of your generosity.
