In This Edition:

Happy New Year. I hope this finds you well.

Small businesses can now apply for federal low-interest loans through the end of 2021 to help them meet the challenges of the pandemic.

As part of the COVID-19 relief bill passed by Congress and signed into law on December 27, the Small Business Administration has extended the deadline for the COVID-19 Economic Injury Disaster Loan program through December 31, 2021.

Loans are offered at very affordable terms, with a 3.75% interest rate for small businesses and 2.75% interest rate for nonprofit organizations, a 30-year maturity, and an automatic deferment of one year before monthly payments begin.

You can get more information and apply for a loan here.

The COVID-19 relief bill also authorizes a new round of the Paycheck Protection Program. The Small Business Administration has not yet published details about how this round of the program will work. We will provide details about the new round of PPP assistance as soon as it is available.

Food insecurity continues to be a serious issue in Santa Clara County with an estimated 6 million meals worth of food being distributed every month.

Distributing that amount of food in an area as large as Santa Clara County safely during the COVID-19 pandemic requires a significant infrastructure and a tremendous number of volunteers. Second Harvest Food Bank and its partners have created more than 130 drive-thru distribution sites where food can be popped into trunks with minimal contact. All of them use volunteers.

Nonprofit groups traditionally see a decline in volunteers in January, but the need does not decline.

  • You can also find opportunities that work best for your schedule by checking the volunteer calendar.
Veggielution also distributes food assistance and needs volunteers. They distribute boxes filled with fresh organic produce sourced from local BIPOC farmers. The boxes also include items such as ground beef, eggs, rice, beans, pita bread, or tortillas. All of these items are also sourced locally.

Veggielution distributes on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday from 8 a.m. to 12 p.m. at the Conservation Corps, 1560 Berger Drive in San Jose.
