Dear Neighbors,

With the COVID-19 Delta variant now infecting a small percentage of vaccinated people as well as many unvaccinated people, Santa Clara County issued a new Universal Indoor Face Covering Health Order that requires wearing a well-fitting mask indoors in public and non-public indoor settings.

This new order aims to reduce community transmission of COVID-19 and protect everyone, including those who are not yet eligible for vaccination (such as children) and people who are elderly or immunocompromised. It is alarming how easily the Delta variant is transmitted, even by people who are vaccinated. Masks provide added protection.

However, vaccines remain the most powerful tool in the fight against COVID-19 and it’s Delta variant, as vaccines are still excellent at protecting against serious illness and death.  Bay Area health officials urge all unvaccinated residents ages 12 and older to get vaccinated as soon as possible.

The County has also released a new data dashboard, which now shows COVID-19 case rates by vaccination status. The latest numbers reflect what public health officials have been echoing in recent weeks: the Delta variant is fueling a surge in cases and the unvaccinated are at the highest risk of infections.

Positive cases among the unvaccinated is nearly four times higher than those fully vaccinated. The case rate per 100,000 residents for the unvaccinated has jumped from about 3 to more than 25 over the past month.

For the dashboard, residents are considered fully vaccinated two weeks after the final dose of the vaccine, and are considered unvaccinated if they have not received any doses of a COVID-19 vaccine.

Vaccination sites throughout the County continue to accept drop-ins for COVID-19 vaccines and same-day appointments are also available. Visit for the latest information and updates.

Together in health,
