Cx Fall 2014

“ To love. To be loved. To never forget your own insignificance. To never get used to the unspeakable violence and the vulgar disparity of life around you. To seek joy in the saddest places. To pursue beauty to its lair. To never simplify what is complicated or complicate what is simple. To respect strength, never power. Above all, to watch. To try and understand. To never look away. And never, never to forget.”

— Arundhati Roy

Hello friends,

With CoPilots curating social impact experiences in their communities and innovators dreaming up sustainable solutions to strengthen their communities, we're feeling pumped!

We spent October reflecting on the year gone by and peaking into year ahead. We are learning, reimagining and solidifying our identity and offerings with old and newer partners. This important work was spearheaded by our incredible Cx Crew, partners and support from our new friends from Endeavour Consulting and Capital One pro-bono volunteers- thank you, thank you!

As we grow, so is our team. We are thrilled to have new energy and talent joining our family. Over the next couple of months, we will be introducing everyone to you.

Lastly, Cx Turns 1 on Tuesday November 25th! Come join us as we celebrate the unbelievable year gone by and ways we're inviting you to get involved in the work ahead. RSVP here, because I look forward to seeing you on the 25th!

PS: Cx Turns 1 is also a great chance to meet the amazing Cx Crew and friends I keep raving about.

Celebrate Cx’s 1 Year Anniversary

How time flies! It will be a year ago this November 25 when Cx officially started. What began as a vision from a group of young and restless innovators and disruptors has grown to become a national movement with impact across diverse communities and sectors.

On November 25th at 6:30PM, come celebrate this special day with Cx family and friends in the beautiful space of Daniels Spectrum, located in Regent Park. RSVP here. Remember to pass the event along to your networks too.

Young Innovators Crawl in Vancouver.

Vancouver, BC

On Sunday, October 19, Jenn McRae co-hosted Vancouver's first ever Young Innovators Crawl. It was a public exploration through five neighbourhoods touring the studios and open houses meant to showcase the work of Vancouver's young creatives from the worlds of design, technology, sustainability, food, arts and culture, and social innovation.

It was a lively and exciting day that culminated with a Design Jam with the Vancouver Design Nerds and an afterparty attended by Vancouver Mayor Gregor Robertson and SFU President Andrew Petter. In addition to celebrating, we also used the opportunity to engage this community of young innovators to better understand what they need to thrive in their work and lives. A report on outcomes of both is forthcoming.

GenImpact Sessions with Young Social Innovators

Kitchener-Waterloo, ON

Keeping with the theme of youth and social innovation, Jonathan Grover, CoPilot in the tech hub of Kitchener-Waterloo, recently facilitated GenImpact sessions with young, emerging social innovators at the University of Waterloo’s GreenHouse program and Conestoga College’s Social Enterpreneuship class.

Over the course of several hours, the groups—facilitated by Grover, GreenHouse Director Tania Del Matto and Conestoga College Instructor Crista Renner—discussed their social entrepreneurial aspirations, outlooks and challenges.

“It was fascinating to see first-hand the perceived challenges and barriers that this next generation of entrepreneurs, striving to make social impact, anticipate in getting their ideas off the ground,” said Grover.

While everything from funding considerations to impact measurement was discussed, it became clear that there is a firm desire for more mentoring and guiding supports, exactly like the kind that Cx’s CoPilots provide.

“I am proud to be able to help guide high potential social entrepreneurs in their journey to success,” Grover remarked, reflecting on the GenImpact sessions. “It is amazing validation to hear the opinions of these social entrepreneurs, knowing that very likely some of them will be amongst the next cohort of Catalysts that we can help grow and succeed.”

We are still looking for a Communications Intern

• Are you a social media maven?
• Do you like writing enthusing about ideas, impact, people and communities?
• Are you equally comfortable creating content (words, images, videos) as well as curating them?
• Are you attuned to learning from non-traditional, often-times disruptive spaces?
• Do you want to be a part of a movement that plans on transforming your city, Canada and the world?

If you nodded to most, if not all, of them then you should seriously consider this brand new opportunity with Cx. Click here for more information, apply and pass it forward!
