A message from our President and Chief Executive Officer, Francis Bradley

COVID-19 has changed the daily lives of Canadians from coast to coast to coast. The Canadian Electricity Association—in coordination with our industry and government partners—is closely monitoring and responding to COVID-19 developments. We are committed to the health and safety of our members, staff and the public.
The pace of COVID-19 developments has been exceptionally rapid, with the situation changing daily. CEA quickly mobilized and began working with our members, government partners and the electric utility industry to gather and share up-to-date information, best practices and guidance. Our collective efforts are helping protect the grid and ensure continued access to safe and reliable electricity during these difficult times. I am proud of the strategic mutual assistance our members are providing to each other on both sides of the border to ensure the electricity industry is able to succeed. They have taken extraordinary actions to ensure that we are able to continue to operate in a safe and reliable manner, and to deliver a critical service—reliable, safe and affordable electricity—for Canadians.
In addition to helping our customers, CEA members are also focused on ensuring the safety of our workers who are essential to the continuity of operations of our control centers, power plants, transmission and distribution facilities, as well as our lineworkers and crews who respond to outages and restore power after natural disasters and other events.
Like many other businesses, employees that can work remotely are working remotely. For critical functions that require staff to be present, our members have taken exceptional precautions. This includes restricting access to facilities, opening secondary facilities to reduce employee interactions, extensive between shift cleaning and disinfecting, and preventing interactions between work crews to limit transmission risk.
COVID-19 does not pose any technical risk to Canada’s electricity infrastructure. Electricity companies have plans in place to ensure uninterrupted service while ensuring any affected employee is able to focus on getting better.
On behalf of CEA, I would like to express our gratitude for all front-line workers. They are serving our communities selflessly and at the same time, they are facing the same challenges at home that we are with this pandemic. Your tireless work during this exceptional time is prodigious.


CEA Presents to the Canadian Radio-Television & Telecommunications Commission

On Friday February 28, the Canadian Electricity Association (CEA) alongside members from Hydro-Québec, BC Hydro and Hydro Ottawa presented to the Canadian Radio-Television & Telecommunications Commission (CRTC) to advocate for regulatory modernization of a portion of Canada’s telecommunications regulations that deal with numbering resources, also called Mobile Network Codes (MNCs). MNC access is a key part of addressing the cybersecurity challenges of the Smart Grid and the growing prevalence of machine to machine communication which will serve customers in new and better ways including optimal charging for Electric Vehicles, efficient integration of distributed energy resources, and significant improvements in safety and reliability. Watch the testimony here.

International Women's Day Event: emPOWERing Women

On March 6, in celebration of the 109th International Women’s Day, the Canadian Electricity Association hosted our first ever emPOWERing Women reception and panel discussion. Through this event, and many other initiatives, CEA continues to re-emphasize our commitment to Natural Resources Canada’s Equal by 30 initiative. As the Canadian electricity industry undergoes a period of unprecedented transformation, CEA is proud to continue on inspiring and encouraging young women in this sector to have authentic and empowering conversations about gender equality. This event also presented another great opportunity for the Association; we are immensely proud to announce that CEA has officially signed the Leadership Accord on Gender Diversity, brought forward by Electricity Human Resources Canada (EHRC). This Accord is “a public commitment by Canadian employers, educators, unions and governments to promote gender diversity within their organizations”. Watch the discussion and view our gallery here.

Breakfast On the Hill

On March 12, CEA’s President and CEO Francis Bradley presented the State of the Canadian Electricity Industry report on Parliament Hill and had an engaging discussion with several Members of Parliament.

The Canadian electricity industry is undergoing a period of unprecedented change through electrification, reconfigured governments and competitive markets. The need for a coordinated, proactive and collaborative approach to achieve Canada’s decarbonization goals, while meeting increasing demands on the grid, is the catalyst for the report.

“The future is bright for electricity, but we also recognize that in order to reach our goals we need to develop innovative solutions across all sectors,” noted Francis. “The creation of a national strategy to guide electrification remains a key CEA policy objective and is at the forefront of our recommendations.” Read the report here

CIIT Comments & Appearance

On February 24, Michael Powell, CEA’s Government Relations Director, appeared before the House of Commons Standing Committee on International Trade as part of their study on Bill C-4 - the CUSMA bill. “Trade and integration form the backbone of a highly positive and mutually beneficial cross-border electricity relationship which provides economic, environmental, resilience and security benefits to Canadians and Americans”, remarked Michael to the committee. Questions to the Association addressed cybersecurity, Canada/US relationship, and energy price. You can read CEA’s submission here.

In March, CEA also participated on the House of Commons Standing Committee on Industry, Science and Technology study on Fraud Calls. CEA submitted a brief highlighting that the criticality of electricity to everyday life presents a special opportunity for scammers to target victims through a variety of fraud call techniques. Our members reported that fraud calls aiming to deceive customers are prevalent, despite the considerable and ongoing efforts to educate their customers on how to protect themselves from fraud. Generation Council Meets in Ottawa

On March 11-12, CEA's Generation Council met in Ottawa to discuss the electricity sector's role in the increased GHG emissions reduction ambitions and federal Net Zero by 2050 commitment, and what that means for CEA's strategic advocacy in 2020 and beyond. Members were also joined by guests from the Impact Assessment Agency to review the changes to the Impact Assessment Act and its implications for major projects.

State of the Canadian Electricity Industry Webinar

The Canadian Electricity Association presented the 2020 State of the Canadian Electricity Industry via webinar on March 16 for all members. Emphasizing the pace and scope of transformation in the electricity sector, the recommendations within the report guide CEA’s thought leadership and advocacy in the year ahead. CEA highlighted specific recommendations within the following topics:

  • Innovating for a secure future
  • Decarbonization, electrification and climate resiliency
  • Meeting the needs of customers and communities
  • Federal regulations and cumulative burden
  • Provincial electricity markets & economic regulation


DMs Meeting

On March 5, CEA, in partnership with Natural Resources Canada, organized the 7th Annual Deputy Ministers Meeting. This represents an opportunity to engage with leadership in key departments to find ways to advance the electricity sector. This year, the meeting was especially relevant - with a new mandate, and new ministers, individual departments are beginning the process of implementation. With clear commitments from government to continue the transition to a low carbon economy through clean technology, energy efficiency, and other policies, the electricity sector will be a key one.

The meeting was also relevant in connecting the sector and federal government on the initial challenges and shifting priorities related to the health and economic crises that are unfolding due to the COVID-19 pandemic. As the sector understands that the government’s priority now is to control and mitigate the pandemic, we will continue to work with key departments to ensure that customers and communities we serve have the power they need to get through this crisis.

Power of Art Contest Postponed 

For more than 125 years, the Canadian Electricity Association has lived by core values that put the priorities of our members, staff and communities first. These values guide us as we face the challenge of responding to COVID-19.

“We have made the decision to postpone our national Power of Art contest and when appropriate, will relaunch this initiative. Our collective efforts are focused on the health and safety of our members, staff and the public, and to keeping the lights on during these difficult times. A huge thank you to all of those who have shared the contest with your communities, schools and families,” said Sarah Robinson, Director of Communications and Marketing.

“Our hearts and thoughts go out to the people who have been affected by this unprecedented event and we appreciate the extraordinary work of front-line workers from coast to coast to coast.”
